ATVriders.com Urges Off-Road Enthusiasts to Stop ROV Mandate
Proposed CPSC Mandates Negatively Affect Handling & Performance of SxS
Baltimore, MD (11/26/2014)
- On October 29 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted to move forward on a proposed rule to impose a mandatory product standard for SXS/UTV vehicles. The changes that have been discussed are designed to make the UTV’s more highway compliant. But we all know that what works well on pavement, isn’t the safest thing for off-road applications. They are proposing untested modifications to the vehicles and ignoring industry proposed safety standards that have been tested extensively and proven safe and effective by industry experts.

CPSC is proposing mandatory design standards for off-road vehicles that could negatively affect safety and performance. Act now to stop them. Learn more at: www.StopTheROVMandate.com |
The proposed rule, if ultimately approved, would limit the ability of UTV/SXS manufacturers to design vehicles to safely provide the level of performance that is expected by SXS enthusiasts. The manufacturers have tried to work with the CPSC since 2009 and have made many safety and design improvements, but those efforts are being ignored in favor of untested modifications that could have dire consequences.
Despite willingness by Polaris and other manufacturers, along with the Recreation Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA), to work in unison with the CPSC to develop ongoing safety improvements for all off-highway vehicles, the CPSC appears determined to mandate handling and performance capabilities, and require excessive and potentially unsafe restraint systems for future ROVs. If not halted, the mandate will unnecessarily limit design freedom in the off-road industry and negatively impact off-road customers.
The proposed CPSC “rule” would require manufacturers to make arbitrary design changes to all future side-by-side vehicles. The proposed changes could lead to future off-road vehicles with reduced steering response, reduction in ground clearance, and more restrictive driver and passenger restraint and seatbelt systems.
There has been a huge public response to this issue that will ultimately affect all UTV/SXS enthusiasts. Just over 40,000 letters have been sent to congress, but more help is needed. There is approximately 60 days left to voice your opinion and let congress know your thoughts on this issue.
We need to keep pushing and asking why people haven't made their voices heard! This is the only opportunity they will have!
We are asking all off-road enthusiasts to reach out to congress and voice your opposition. More information can be found at www.stoptherovmandate.com .
