Wienen crosses the finish at Red Bud MX to earn second overall |
Wienen grabbed the ATVRiders.com Fastest Qualifier Award in morning qualifier sessions to put him in position to pick the first spot at the gate for moto 1.
As the gate dropped for moto 1, Wienen came out of the first turn just outside of the top five. Determined to move up through the field quickly, Wienen put his head down and was able to climb his way into third by the end of the first lap. With a little less than two seconds between himself and the rider in third, Wienen gradually kept chipping away at the distance. With a mistake from the rider in first at the halfway point, Wienen found himself in second and on the next lap made the pass to take over the lead position. Wienen went on to take the first checkers of the day.
In moto 2, Wienen came out of the first turn in a much better situation sitting in the second place position. Wienen tried a few times to make an advance into the front but settled back into second and claimed second overall with a 1-2 finish. Another race weekend with no points lost and no points gained on the championship chase, Wienen continues to sit 22 points ahead with two rounds left of racing in the 2016 Championship Series.
The series will take a weekend off then head to Hurricane Mills, Tenn. at Loretta Lynn's Ranch on August 13.
