Silverton, CO – The change
in the season is quickly approaching and by the
middle of September, the signs of fall will be visible
as the leaves begin to change colors in the mountains
of Colorado. One of the most beautiful places to
visit especially in the fall is the towns of Silverton
and Durango, which are in the San Juan Mountains
region of Colorado. This area is an outdoor enthusiast
paradise with sking, hiking, horseback riding, and
more importantly to us, there are plenty of ATV
and SxS trails to explore in the San Juan Mountains.
Another very unique and historical appeal to the
area is the famous Durango and Silverton Narrow
Gauge Railroad, which offers a breath taking riding
along the Animas River between the two towns.
With such much to see and do between Durango
and Silverton, we planned out a two day trip,
and we had an awesome experience aboard the Durango
and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad on day one,
and we explored the San Juan Mountain Range the
next day in to San Juan Backcountry‘s 2013 Kawasaki
Teryx4 750 SxS.
Our adventure began in the 130 year old town
of Durango, which sits at 6,512 feet above sea
level and was developed in 1881 by the Denver
and Rio Grande Railroad to serve the San Juan
Mining District. The bustling small town has a
population of around 14,000 people; the town features
many restaurants, boutiques, lounges and hotels.

scenery was breath taking especially with

We began our escapade by boarding the famed Durango
and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad early in the
morning. The 45 mile trip takes three and a half
hours to wind through the beautiful back drop
of the San Juan Mountains and up the Animas river
gorge to the town of Silverton, which has an elevation
of over 9,000 feet, and unlike Durango, this mountain
town only has a few hundred year round residence
due to the cold and snowy winters in the high
country.
