Maxxis "Razr Cross" ATV Tires Product Review
::Continued::

We were excited to get a couple sets of tires and give them a workout on our two mini quads. We mounted our the 20x6-10 fronts and 18x10-8 rears on a Hybrid CR85 mini quad, and another set of front 20x6-10 and rear 18x6.5-8 were mounted on a DRX 90 CVT mini ATV. Both of these minis would give the tires a good pounding and what better place to test them than on a motocross track and at WORCS Series.

WORCS Youth ATV riders Kelsey and Brandon Lugan from Kuna, Idaho would ride in various track conditions including some technical woods sections at Riverdale Raceway in Toutle, Washington. Riverdale Raceway would prove to be an excellent track for adversity and constantly changing soils varying from the nearby Mt. St. Helen Ash to river rock and deeply rutted woods sections.

Brandon Lugan raced two classes on the tires over the WORCS weekend and was smiling ear to ear when pulling off the track for the last race of the weekend.

“I had a blast running these tires ! I felt they gave me an advantage in the woods when it was really starting to get deep and rutted out. I felt like I had an advantage with ground clearance when it came to the fallen trees that we had to maneuver over. A lot of the other riders were getting hung up in the woods sections, high centering, getting parts ripped off there minis to where I was not , and was able to pick up several positions moving up from 5th to a solid 1st place this weekend”, said Brandon. Brandon Continued to say “In the MX sections, it was a lot less effort running a 20 inch front and a 'real' 18 inch tire in the rear. I felt like I wasn’t getting swallowed up by the large ruts that the big quads created.”

The tires appeared to be doing what they were designed for the youth riders when they were faced with running threw large deep XC sections with tree roots, logs, and rock. The key to the rear tires working so well are that they are a “true” 18 inch tire, but are still a 6.5 wide tire. We all know that there are several 18 inch tires out there and a few that do not measure up to a true 18, and thee 10 inch wide tires available rob the power from the Minis because of the larger foot print and added weight.

Kelsey Lugan

WORCS rider Kelsey Lugan also had some seat time over the past month to try them in several venues and kept commenting on how the front tires track so well. Kelsey said, “I wasn’t sure what to expect, but on my first lap of practice, I was totally happy with how they handled. Normally coming out of a corner, my quad likes to spin, but due to the extra side bite, I was actually pulling up the front end! I have NEVER done that with my Hybrid before! I could feel that I was getting better traction on the straights because I was able to lift the front end and go over the bumps vs. hitting them head on .That’s another way I could tell I was getting better traction.We have a lot of hard pack and desert terrain here in Idaho, that is another place I felt these tires really shined! I got a chance to give the tires a pretty good workout over the last month in various types of terrain and found the Razr Cross tires to be very versatile.”

The Razr Cross tires for both applications took very little effort in and out of the corners in wet and dry conditions. The tires seemed to run true and predictable in both the XC and MX portions.

The 4-ply Razr Cross tires weigh in a little more than a 2 ply tire, but given the durability and overall performance, both riders didn’t notice the difference in the weight as the aggressive tread design was excellent in both dry and wet handling conditions.

Maxxis once again has put out another great new tire and we suspect to see a lot more of these tires at future events on the youth quads as well as for the full sized ATV. For more information on the Razr Cross tires, visit www.maxxis.com
