Surprise, AZ - The
ITP Quadcross Series continues to expand its reach as
for the first time ever the series goes beyond the California
borders to Surprise, Arizona for round eight of the
ten race series. The Speed World Complex would host
the event and would offer another first for the ITP
Quadcross Series with the races held after dark under
the lights.
This highly anticipated round of racing attracted
the normal series followers from California, but it
also stirred the interest of many of the locals in
Arizona. By race time, there were 192 entries, which
set a new record attendance for an event.
Practice for the event was held during the day with
the first race scheduled to start at 6PM just before
dusk. During pro practice, Dana Creech would ended
up wrecking hard in the whoops with his quad landing
on top of him, but he was able to get back on his
feet and prepare himself mentally and physically for
Moto One, which was scheduled as the third race of
the evening.
As the sun set over the mountains, the lights came
on and illuminated track, which turned night into
day. The lighting system worked exceptionally well
except for the starting area where there were some
dark spot, and unfortunately the first race of the
night had a bad crash right off the start and caused
a huge delay in the racing.

Dustin Nelson wins Qualifier One with #14 Jeremy
Schell in second |
The Pro Class had a record 29 entries, so the pro
field was split into two divisions to determine gate
position only for the Main Event. In the first qualifier,
Jeremy Schell and Dustin Nelson battled for lead out
of the gate, and it appeared Schell had the lead,
but after the far corner it was Nelson out front and
no sign of Schell. As the riders came around it was
Nelson, Carrillo and Patterson with Schell dropping
back to almost last place. Schell quickly began picking
off riders at every corner and it wasn’t long
before he had worked his way into the top five and
eventually back up into second place behind Dustin
Nelson in the lead. Nelson would take the win followed
by Schell and Logan Holliday.
In Qualifier two one of the local Pros grabbed the
Holeshot, but as they came through a horseshoe section
of the track he rolled over and Darrell Patton took
over the lead followed by Danny Ragan and Doug Eichner.
Eichner would make the quick pass on Ragan and begin
working on Patton in the lead. Dana Creech was busy
working his way through the pack after getting a bad
start. Within a few laps, Eichner would pass Patton
for the lead followed by Creech as Patton dropped
back to third. Creech began applying the pressure
to Eichner and would make the pass and take the win
followed by Eichner and Patton.

Large
crowd of spectators gather around the track
to catch a glimpse of the Pros |
The night racing was plagued with delays, which pushed
the Pro Main start back to 11PM at night with plenty
of amateur racing to follow. With the Pro Main about
to begin, the spectators lined the fence in anticipation.
The gate dropped and Dustin Nelson launched his Dr.
D YFZ450 out to the early lead once again with Jeremy
Schell knocking on his back door. Meanwhile, Dana
Creech & Doug Eincher were involved in a pileup
in the first turn, which sent them to the back of
the pack.
By the end of lap one, Schell had made his move on
Nelson and taken over the lead with Nelson dropping
back to second place ahead of Darrell Patton and Mike
Machado. Nelson continued to apply the pressure to
Schell in the lead while Eichner recovered from his
first turn wreck and started working his way to the
front.

Jeremy Schell leads #94 Dustin Nelson to the
Checkered with the win |
With Schell and Nelson battling for the lead, Machado
would make the pass on Patton and take over the third
spot while Eichner continued picking off riders as
he moved through the pack.
In the end, Jeremy Schell would claim his third win
of the season and take over the points with the prior
points lead, Dana Creech finishing back in 19th which
dropped him back to third place behind Dustin Nelson
who finished out the race in second place with Mike
Machado in third. Doug Eichner was able to work his
way into the top 10 with a ninth place finish.
With only two rounds left in the series and only
a few points separating Schell, Nelson, and Creech,
the championship is still up for grabs, which will
make for some exciting racing at the final two rounds
of the series back at Glen Helen.
