just put new piston and stage 2 hotcam in and i here a tick tick sound coming from the head. im also sure that i have my valves adjusted right. do you think i put the piston in backwards or does a hotcam just make that noise?

the hotcam stage 1 is claimed to make noise but not the stage 2. You say you adjusted your valves right, but was the engine on the correct TDC. There are two different TDC's if you didnt know, cause thats what it sounds like is wrong. If you adjusted them on the wrong TDC then they will be hitting the inside of the head. You might want to check.
Both the stage I and stage II will tick more than the stock cam. This is due to the higher clearence when adjusting.

i willl agree the stage 1's do tick. we have never had a problem with a stage 2. i would make sure the valves are right. the specs are .005 intake and .006 exhaust. is the timing chain tensioner adjusted properly.

how do you adjust the timing chain tension?

It's self adjustable, but I would check to make sure that it is still good, they do have a life. I know for the CRF bikes you are supposed to replace the chain tensioner every 100 hours, I doubt its the same for the quads, but its not something I would let go too long. If it is your tensioner and that chain jumps a tooth or two...........watch out. You'll have valve sticking out the top of your piston. Just take the tensioner off of the engine and loosen it and tighten it. See if it has any play at all. If not then I would say readjust those valves!

yes, i kind of worded that wrong. the tensioner you can't adjust. what i ment to ask if it was adjusting by itself properly? it should retract and release smoothly when you pull the screwdriver out of it. if it sticks, it is probably bad.

fixed it. i put on tdc and i didn't have any slack in my rocker arms on the exhaust side. so i readjusted them. so my exhaust valves were probably hitting the piston right? and do you think i have any real bad damage? don't think i do because it runs just fine.
just a little curious

It's possible, it's also possible that the rockers themselves were hitting inside the head at the very top. Who knows???
