High Point Racing Wins SCORE San Felipe 250
Scott McFarland & Nick Oldham Win San Felipe 250 SxS Class

Moab, UT (1/29/2015) - High Point Racing kicked off their 2015 racing season with the UTV Pro class win at the SCORE San Felipe  in Baja, Mexico. Driver Scott McFarland and navigator Nick Oldham put their Polaris RZR XP 1000 UTV to the test on what is known as one of the roughest courses in in all of Baja. This year’s SCORE San Felipe course covered three different types of terrain, shock breaking seemingly endless whoops, big rocks and high speed dry lake beds.

One of the unique things about SCORE off road racing in this area of Baja, Mexico is that for most of the course the racers have several lines to choose from creating a real challenge for the teams as they are forced to make split second decisions based on small bits of information and a lot of gut feeling.  Some lines are a little faster or a little smoother or have fewer obstacles but knowing which line will be best for you and your vehicle can be a real gamble.

Scott, Nick and Team High Point’s crew chief Joe Owen arrived in San Felipe a couple of days before the race to pre run the course in a stock Polaris RZR. After one time around the course they were more confused than before they started.

There were so many routes that weave in and out of each other it’s almost impossible to keep track of them all let alone choose one. The team planned to run the course again the next day and make notes that would help to have a trouble free and fast race.

Team High Point drew a fourth place start position giving them a good location to judge the race pace of the rest of the UTV class but not have to eat too much dust. As the race began, the team quickly moved into second place but then suffered a blown belt at about race mile 55. Navigator Nick Oldham changed the drive belt in less than 5 minutes but the down time allowed other racers to pass leaving High Point in sixth place.

The pit crew performed an amazingly fast fueling at the first pit stop resulting in a jump up to third place, but in McFarland’s effort to push for the front, he tagged a large rock at over 70mph flattening the right rear tire and breaking the wheel, which cost the team some valuable time, McFarland was able to regroup and charge his way up into the second spot near the half way point of the race in the high speed rocky wash section of the course.

High Point Racing Team's pitstops were flawless allowing them to make up some ground and eventually take over the lead

The second pit stop went as well as the first, and McFarland was making great time once again with the FOX suspension working amazing through the grueling whoops section, which allowed them to close the gap on the competition as day turned to night.

After dark, Wicked Built LED light bar lit the course like it was mid-day and McFarland never had to check up due to poor visibility. Oldham navigated the Polaris RZR XP 1000 down the long wash South of San Felipe to check point four passing Team UTV Inc. that was stopped for repairs moving the High Point Team into the lead. McFarland took a conservative pace through the narrow canyon and over the big rock sections before heading into the final stretch with lead, which McFarland and Oldham held to the checkered flag for the 2015 SCORE San Felipe 250 win.
