La Crosse, WI (6/4/2015) - Root River Racing’s Josh Upperman scored his first podium finish of the season at round five of the 2015 Mt. Dew AMA ATV motocross Championships at Ironman Raceway in Crawfordsville, IN.

This was the inaugural round for ATV motocross at Ironman Raceway, and like many, Josh Upperman has been looking forward to this round all season. “It’s an awesome track, and I am really excited to get a chance to race here, and I think it is a good opportunity for all of us,” said Josh Upperman.

Conditions were good for the start of the first moto and that helped get Josh Upperman a good start in second off the line. “I had a good start and was second in the holeshot. I made a couple of mistakes, but I was able to get around a couple people and back into fourth place and have a good finish,” said Upperman.

For moto number two, the conditions were quite different as a thunderstorm moved in and saturated the track. lightning in the area also delayed the races, but Upperman was not going to let the wet and muddy conditions get the best of him. “We did a couple of changes to our set up when it started raining, and it really worked out great for us,” said Upperman.

Those changed enabled Upperman to grab the holeshot, but the slick conditions did cost him a few positions. “I made a couple mistakes and a couple people got around, but I got back up to third and, I settled in and finished third for third overall. It was a real mess out there quite a few people had issues, so I just tried to ride smart and get as many points as possible,” said Upperman.

This was Josh Upperman’s first podium finish of the year, and he couldn’t be happier with the results. “My Root River Honda was running great out there. The changes we made for the second moto worked perfect, and I had a good finish. It was really a great weekend, and it feels great to be back up on the podium. The Root River team has been working hard, and I can’t thank them and all of our sponsors enough for helping me get there. This finish was also special because we are sponsored by Racing for Cancer and every time I get on the podium, they donate money to cancer research, which is something that affects a lot of people and is something we believe in,” said Upperman, who is currently fourth in series points.

The next round of the 2015 Mt. Dew AMA ATV motocross championships heads to Sunset Ridge in Walnut, IL on June 13-14. Last year Josh Upperman was third on the pro podium at Sunset Ridge and he is hoping to repeat that success this round, and close in on the top three in the series championship points chase.
