Hinson: History of Hinson Racing Clutch Components
::Continued::
What makes the Hinson Clutch Basket so special is
they are now made out of aircraft quality aluminum
and go through a special process called Akadizing.
Akadizing is a special coating that goes through
a reaction certain chemicals and electricity are
combined. The coating is put on the clutch basket
to harden it and make it stronger after the part
has been cut out and gone through a seven step machining
process. “Akadizing tightens the molecules
on the surface of the part and also aligns the molecules
to make the part more structurally sound.”
Wayne explained. According to Hinson, the Akadized
coating is only one point softer than a diamond
on the mole scale and is five times stronger than
hard anodizing.

Products utilizes CAD/CAM Systems, which
takes a computer design and sends the
information to a manufacturing tool to
convert a solid piece of aluminum into
a clutch component

Another notable reason the Hinson clutch Baskets
are so durable is that the inner hub and the pressure
plates are precision made. “They rotate exactly
true and don’t wobble around, but the clutch
basket does wobble around. It’s engineered
to do that so it stays centric, which is important
since you have about eight or nine plates that are
pressed together.” Stated Hinson. “The
inner hub and pressure plates are notched all the
way around to give better grip and not allow the
clutch to slip like in some other clutches that
are only notched in about 4 or 5 places.”
He added.

Racing Clutch Components are utilized by
nearly every Factory ATV & Motocrycle
race team whether they proudly run the Hinson
Cluth Cover or not |
Some of the riders that run the Hinson Clutch
basket include James “Bubba” Stewart
and Ricky Carmichael, in the supercross world,
and almost all of the top pros in the ATV industry
are using Hinson’s clutch baskets as well.
All though Hinson’s products are most widely
known in the ATV and dirtbike industries, he is
branching out and producing clutch baskets for
street bikes as well. “We have a line of
street bike baskets right now. We have them for
the GSXR 1000 and 600 and the Honda 600. We have
“slipper” clutches (back torque eliminators)
for almost all of the street bikes as well.”
He added.

Racing's latest product is thte BTL Series
Slipper Clutch, which allows the clutch
to slip predictably for better cornering
and less kickback when braking |
Now that Hinson Racing has grown so much, Wayne
has decided to step away from the Suzuki racing
team in 2007, and concentrate more on his own
business. “This is something that I really
need to do. I love to go racing, but we are really
busy here. My kids do a great job taking care
of things, but it’s time for me to help.”
Stated Hinson. “It’s time for me to
get caught up from the last four years of racing!”
He joked. “We’ve gotten way behind
on some development stuff we are doing and we
really need to get going on that.” Hinson’s
commitment and involvement in the racing industry
over the years has had a positive impact on the
racing community and all though he will taking
more time to concentrate on his own affairs, Wayne
promises he will still be at the races, just not
fully involved with a team like before.
