The group publicizes the event on the Internet and John began working with Mike on the logistics of the trip. “I looked at shipping my bike and having Mike trailer it down for me but everything was just too expensive,” John explained. In an attempt to grow the event and promote attendance from all corners of the country, Mike finally told John that if he could make it out, he’d have a truck waiting at the airport and a Tecate for him to ride. That was enough for John and his girlfriend Lisa to make the trip out and experience dune riding for the first time and what an experience it proved to be. John was wide-eyed and white knuckled for most of the trip. “I’ve never seen anything this big” he explained. “There is nothing on the east coast that even compares to the dunes out here.”

Rockhound Motorsports Sponsored BBQ
The only “sanctioned” activity throughout the weekend is a BBQ put on by Rockhound Motorsports the last night of the festival. Mike specializes in Tecate restoration and raffles off a host of chromed Tecate parts as well as a complete powder coating from J.D.’s Powder Coating. The event mostly revolves around lots and lots of dune riding and Tecate owners swapping stories about mods they’ve made or different tips and tricks they’ve learned over the years as they seek to keep these classic machines alive.

Kawasaki Tecate-3 with a KX500 Engine
While the event revolves around the Tecate, anyone and everyone is welcome to attend. You’ll find all kinds of machines in camp including some wild hybrids. Steve Jasper’s fleet includes a pretty pink Tecate for his daughter Rebecca, an immaculate 330R and a Tecate trike with a KX500 engine stuffed inside. Another unique machine was Derick Coursey’s CRF 450 powered Tecate.

Whether you ride a Tecate or not you’re sure to have a great time roosting the sands of the Oregon dunes should you choose to make the trip out in 2010. Tecate Fest is held every year at one of Oregon’s three sand dune riding areas and falls on the last weekend in May or the first weekend in June.
