San Juan
Backcountry Snowmobile Tour Review
::Continued::
Larry took the Ski-Doo Summit 600 off into the
powder to show me the difference between riding
on the groomed trail and in the deep snow, and
he had a center mounted handle on his sled, and
he stood completely on one side of the sled to
use his entire body weight to carve through the
snow. Also, he normally, carries a shovel with
him on the ride just in case someone does get
stuck in the snow.

San
Juan Backcountry's Larry Gallegos demonstrated
how to ride in deep powder & you can
see how much he has to lean off the side
of the sled to carve the snow |
We had a chance to ride for several hours, but we weren’t fortunate enough to climb to the top of Turk Mountain because the top was in the clouds during our ride with on and off snow showers, so we stayed at the lower elevations to avoid the fog. We did however, get a chance to check out the “Picture” cabin, which is an old hunting cabin surrounded by the scenic mountains.

The
"Picture" cabin offers a scenic
backdrop for photos while Harlen Foley gets
on the gas without leaning enough to the
inside to keep his front end planted |
During our 2 hour long ride, we did get a chance to explore a great mixture of trails from wide open high speed sections to tight trails surrounded by pine trees, and we really got a feel for snowmobile riding, as we had a chance to ride both the Ski-Doo Summit and Yamaha Venture Lite. The Ski-Doo Summit is the sportier of the two sleds, but we enjoyed the Cadillac feel of the Yamaha Venture Lite, which was much easier to maneuver through the snow.
|
The
Ski-Doo had a sportier feel, but as a first
time rider, we preferred the Yamaha Venture
Lite that provided a plush and user friendly
experience |
We wish that we had more time to ride, but we had to get on the road to our next event. We were thankful that we had a chance to take our first snowmobile ride, and we are looking forward to coming back again in the future and spending a full day riding in the snow with San Juan Backcountry Tours. We recommend it to anyone visiting the San Juan Mountains during the winter months.

We
highly recommend checking out San Juan Backcountry

Even if you have never ridden a snowmobile
or an experienced rider, you will have a
blast! |
