San Juan
Mountains Train & Trail Ride Adventure
::Continued::
The former mining town of Silverton now survives
on tourism. The town is rich with history and
features the National Historic Landmark District
and the Silverton Historic District. We strolled
around the town taking in the beautiful sites
and interesting history.
 |
The Durango
& Silverton Railroad pulls right into
downtown Silverton, and all the passengers
have over two hours to check out the town
or go on Jeep, ATV, or SxS tour of the
San Juan Mountains and its ghost towns
and mines
|
Our layover lasted two hours and fifteen minutes
before we boarded the train and headed back down
the mountain to Durango. For our return trip we
upgraded our tickets to the Knight Sky, which
is a glass roof car that gave us an even better
view of the fall foliage that surrounded the rail
road. The mix of yellow aspen trees and evergreens
made for a picturesque experience.
 |
We highly
recommend the Knight Sky or Silver Vista
car for either your trip up or back from
Silverton because they provide a great
view of the scenery with the glass roof,
but also the Knight Sky has first class
airplane seats, which are really comfortable
|
The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
offers several different options for your trip
from Durango to Silverton. The rates start at
$85 per person and $51 for children ages 4-11,
children three and under ride free if not occupying
their own seat. The train offers several different
seating options which include Open-Air Gondola,
Coach, Deluxe, First and Presidential Class. The
Silverton train runs from May 4 – October 26.

We stayed
at the Prospector Motel, which is in the
downtown Silverton, CO & only a few
blocks from San Juan Backcountry Rentals
|
The second day of our Colorado adventure started
at The Prospector Motel in Silverton. After a
good night’s sleep at the quaint motel, we headed
to San Juan Backcountry rentals, which offers
ATV, SxS, Jeep, motorcycle, and snowmobile rentals.
They are conveniently located in downtown Silverton,
and were within walking distance of our motel.
 |
San Juan
Backcountry Rentals has a full line of
ATV & SxS vehicles to rent & they
also offer numerous guided tours
|
 |
San Juan
Backcountry Rentals also provide all the
safety riding gear along with rain coats
if needed
|
San Juan Backcountry rentals has been serving the
Silverton area for the six years, and it is a family
owned business. They offer ATV and SxS rentals from
May to October, which is a limited season because
of the snow, so they offer snowmobile rentals south
town on Molas Pass from December to April. They
have a huge selection of tours and rental packages,
and the ATV rentals start at just $100 plus tax
for a two hour rental, and a full day rental is
just $180 plus tax. They also offer 2 and 4 seat
SxS rentals as well.
