Lane Baird Second in Ultra 4 Racing SxS Debut
12 Year Old SxS Racer Lane Baird

Sturgis, KY (10/2/2014) - Sturgis off-road blowout, September 12th 2014, was a historic day for Bill Baird Motorsports and Ultra 4 racing. As we saw the debut of the youngest driver to ever enter a Ultra 4 racing event. Lane Baird at the ripe age of 12 years old raced his first utv race. Lane decided to run the pro utv class as his debut being the chance at winning $2,000, He figured why not try for it. Everyone a little uncertain of how the weekends outcome would be stood strong behind Lane’s choice.

Friday was practice day Lane and co driver / crew chief Casey Greek went out and put in about ten laps of practice. With a few shock adjustments the car was working great. Practice laps went good, Lane felt that he was ready for the races. Casey went over the car and cleaned it up for Saturday’s races.

Saturday morning we went to the drivers meeting. Then it was go time, UTVs were the first race of the day. The track was completely different than Fridays practice session.  So Casey told Lane to take it easy the first lap to get a good feel for the track. So in the first lap they got passed by 3 other racers moving them back to 6th place. But all along this was the plan to let other drivers make mistakes and hurt there cars early and work thought the pack and end up in the front of the pack when the checkers flew. This plan worked perfectly, By the 2nd lap Lane was up to speed closing the gap on the drivers ahead by lap 3 Lane had worked himself into a solid 3rd place. Lane began to put in blistering lap times and closing on 2nd. With a quick pass in the woods section Lane reappeared in 2nd place keeping his pace up he closed in 2 seconds on first but knowing there wasn’t much time left Lane and Casey made the call to back off and take a strong 2nd place in the heat race.

In the main event Lane was starting in the 2nd position to Chicky Barton. The game plan this race was to go all out right from the start and try to make short work of the rest of the field. The green flag flew and Lane And Chicky drag raced into the first turn. Chicky having the inside advantage keeping the lead Lane went to work on trying to set up a pass in the 3rd and 4th corners. Chicky was smart and kept his lines tight. Without being to aggressive the pass wouldn’t be made so Lane kept on the back bumper of Chicky as the laps clicked off. Lane stayed within 3 seconds for 5 laps. On the 5th lap lane made a small mistake in the woods and allowed the first place car to gain a little ground. With 2 laps to go and no heat from 3rd place Lane kept a smooth and contestant pace to keep the car and our 2nd place hopes alive. As the checkers flew Lane would finish only 5 seconds behind seasoned veteran Chicky Barton in only his first UTV race.

We at Bill Baird Motorsports are very proud of Lane Baird in his first race. Showing that he has the maturity to not only be a great racer but a very mature driver. With only having 8 hours of UTV practice before this race we are looking forward to a great future.
