KTM's Paul Holmes Remains In Contention With A Podium Finish
Round 5 - ACU Brith MMX Quad Championship

KTM's Paul Holmes is in 2nd overall after round 5

United Kingdom (6/26/2009) - Team KTM UK rider, Paul Holmes, took his KTM 505 SX ATV to another fantastic British Championship podium at the weekend, the result leaving him well in contention for British Championship honours with four rounds of the series remaining.

Hosted by NORA-MX at the demanding hardpack Culham Park circuit just South of Oxford, the 5th round of the 2009 ACU British MMX Quad Championship proved to be one of the most exciting and closely contested meetings of the series to date, an epic three way battle for the lead in the closing stages of the final moto keeping the large crowd well entertained.

KTM's James Hellewell charged to a 16th overall for the weekend

A challenging circuit layout that proved to be extremely difficult to pass on as the day progressed, both Holmes and team-mate, James Hellewell, put in a fantastic display to make their way through the field in both motos, Holmes battling from 5th place in both races and narrowly missing out on a final moto victory for a 3-2 scorecard and 3rd step on the podium, Hellewell charging through to post 15-17 and 16th overall, an outstanding result from a second row start and moving up from 22nd in each race.

With five rounds of the nine round series run, Holmes maintains 2nd place in the standings just twenty-six points adrift, while Hellewell has moved up to 21st with a three point deficit to a position inside the top twenty. The series now moves to the spectacular Dean Moor Circuit near Whitehaven, Cumbria, on Sunday the 19th of July.

"It's always good to get a
podium finish..."

Paul Holmes
“ It’s always good to get a podium finish, but I’m a little disappointed not to have reduced the deficit to the lead in the Championship. This circuit is tough to pass on, and after gating 5th in the opening moto I left myself a lot to do but moved up to 4th on the second lap. The track had been watered just before the moto, and with the chance of running in to softer areas if you veered off line it took me longer than I’d have liked to get up to 3rd, by which time the leading pair had pulled away. The second race was awesome, especially having worked my way back up from 5th to 2nd after making a couple of mistakes early on, and the last couple of laps was a lot of fun to ride with the lead changing hands so many times. The KTM 505 SX has been fantastic all year and just handles whatever terrain and conditions that you subject it to, and with four rounds remaining I am still in with a good chance of getting to the top of the table.”

James Hellewel
“ It’s been a fantastic day and I’m really happy with my overall result. I didn’t get a good time in practice as I chose the wrong tyre set up, but with a few changes in the interval I was able to work my way through in both races despite starting from the second row. The circuit got really choppy in some parts and doesn’t have that many places for overtaking, but with the Team KTM UK 505 SX handling like a dream I was able to really attack the circuit. It’s been a great weekend and I’m really happy with the progress I’m making, so I’m looking forward to the next meeting at Dean Moor in July where I’ll be aiming to move inside the top twenty in the series.”
