Union, SC (4/15/2008) - It was
time to get ready for round four of GNCC racing
at the Pirelli Big Buck in Union SC. I had a lot
to work to get done between rounds, I had to put
a new frame under the bike after hitting a tree
in NC. I also put in my new motor that had some
headwork done from Rage ATV Racing, and also a new
FCR carburetor. With only a few days to run the
bike, I got it dialed in the best that I could.
And was really looking forward to racing it.
I decided to carpool with Matt Smiley and Wes
Stone to try and save some cash with the high
cost of fuel. We all ended up saving some dough.
We arrived at the track early on Friday morning,
and it was nice out with the sun shining and temps
around 80! It looked like without rain it would
be a dry race.
During the day I got some new graphics from
317 on my quad, and had my Elka shocks freshened
up at the trailer. Once we had everything done
at the track, we headed back to the hotel, then
to the Olive Garden where I filled up for the
race on Saturday.
It ended up raining overnight, which was good
because without it the race would have been very
dusty. We got to the track early and were able
to catch the youth race. I cheered on Derrec Robinson,
who put in a good ride taking second place in
the 90 Mod. 12-15 class after being stuck in a
bottleneck. With the morning race about to begin,
the track looked like it was going to dry up and
be nice.

Noon rolled around and it was time to start getting
ready to go. I spoke with Mark Spataro, who is
a professional trainer who I am going to start
working with. He hooked me up with a pre-race
drink that had me ready to go. The flag waved,
and I had a bad start having to double kick the
bike. The Rage motor pulled strong and I was able
to make my way about mid pack.
I think we had the jetting a little off, or
maybe it was the warmer weather, because I ended
up stalling the bike a few times. The track was
nice as expected, and a lot of lines were opening
up. I was around 12th on my third lap when my
luck ran out. With the new motor and carb, we
misjudged our fuel consumption, a big mistake,
and I ran out of fuel.
Brian Goglio a College A racer was broke down
where I was and he offered to give me fuel. I
searched up and down the track and found a Mountain
Dew can. We popped his fuel line and dumped three
cans in my tank, which got me going. Do the Dew!
Thanks Brian! Next stop was the Verkade’s
pit where I got about a gallon of fuel. I was
stuck for about 20 minutes, and was just about
getting lapped. I was able to make another lap,
which gained me two positions, not bad!
When I reached the checkers, I was in 15th in
pro and 88th overall. It was better than a DNF,
and made for an interesting story. I will have
this bike dialed in for TN, and will be ready
to go. See you at the Ranch!
