Round three of the GNCC series was to be held and Steele Creek campground in Morganton, NC, which attracted a huge crowd of spectators.  The series has been coming here for years, and racers can always expect challenging hills filled with whoops up and down, the traditional mud hole under the bridge, and with heavy rain moving in overnight, the track was already in rough condition for the start of the afternoon race.

The 1:00pm race was pushed back a half hour due to the crazy track conditions during the morning race. “It is pretty bad out there, we had to modify the course a little after the morning, so pick smart lines and you will be fine”, said trail boss Barry Hawk during the opening ceremonies, so a good start was critical, and McClure charged his way into the second spot off the start heading into the woods, and by the end of lap one, McClure moved up into the overall lead.

“I knew a start was a key factor in today’s race. My DWT tires, paired with the Baldwin Motor and KG clutch, ripped me out front early, and I knew I had to stay there,” said McClure.

Jarrod McClure got off to a great start & rode in the top three the entire race

ATVriders.com McClure rode smart all day. Coming into the pits second lap he chose not to stop for goggles or fuel and stay out front. Walker Fowler and Chris Borich caught him that lap, as lapped riders had already began to mix in. The three riders rode in a train for a while until a lapped rider caused problems for Fowler allowing Borich and McClure to pull away.

McClure and Borich began to gap the field, and on the last lap they had there own race out front dicing for the lead. In the last lap, McClure passed Borich for the lead, but then Borich made the pass back in a muddy section with a few miles to go. McClure crossed the line in second place only three seconds behind the reigning champ.

“Once Chris and I got past Walker we just rode together those last two laps. It was a lot of fun. He would pull me a little then we would hit lappers or pick different lines and meet up again. I can not thank my pit crew enough for all the help in the mud today and keeping me going out there, and my Elka /Teixeira Tech suspension was amazing despite the added weight of the mud. The program is really starting to come together, ” said McClure.
