Team Suzuki/Yoshimura Racers survive the sands of Macon, GA

#55 Doug Gust
Lizella, GA - (3/20/06) -The normally rough Echeconnee track in Macon was graded on Saturday night and provided the riders with an uncharacteristic smooth track early Sunday - but it got rough as the day wore on. The first moto of the 4th Round if the ATVA MX Nationals went off under cloudy skies and a shower of sand!

Doug Gust got out in eighth place, while Jeremiah was 15th. On the first lap another rider high-sided into Jeremiah and both went down. By the time Jeremiah got going again he was dead last. By moto's end he worked his way up to 15th.

Doug was having a better go of it and at the ¾ mark had worked up to second. He closed a 12 second gap to leader John Natalie down to four seconds, but ran out of time.

Moto two went off with rain coming down. t wasn't too bad though and the sandy surface held up well. Doug gated around 7th with eremiah right behind him in eighth. Jeremiah went around Doug about halfway and he finished up with 4th for the moto. Jeremiah's 15 - 4 moto scores netted him a ninth overall.

Doug started managed to work his way up to fifth place in the second moto. "I just couldn't seem to get going any better than that. I just stayed there," Gust explains. "It was a bad day. I just didn't feel 'on' all weekend." His 2-5 moto scores translated into 3rd overall on the day.

Doug Gust on the Podium

Team manager Wayne Hinson was philosophical on the day: "We gave it our best shot and it just wasn't our day. We just got beat. The bikes worked good and it was a hot and cold race for us," Hinson said. "We need to really work on our starts for sure. The bike is making too much power mid-track and we are spinning the tires. We're going to make some adjustments with the mapping to mellow the power out a bit in that area...that should fix it for Budds Creek."

Gust is back in Wisconsin and doing a little cross training on snowmobiles. He concurs with Hinson, "I need to work on my starts so that I can start out in front instead of working my way up through the pack."

And out front is where we hope to see Gust and Jones on April 2nd at
Budds Creek, MD.
