Phoenix, AZ (1/25/2007)- The World Off
Road Championship Series (WORCS) was started by Dave Hamel,
the brother of legendary desert racer Danny Hamel who
was tragically killed in a Baja race in 1995. The series
evolved in 2001 and was designed to be a safe venue in
a closed course format. ATVs were added to the series
in 2003, and by 2005 the ATV entries were so high, the
series had to be split into separate ATV and motorcycle
events taking place on back to back weekends. The series
is now owned and operated by Sean Reddish, who himself
comes from a racing background, and he and his staff have
taken the series to the next level by listening to his
racers comments and concerns.
The racing format in WORCS is very unique, as it combines
different disciplines of riding. Not only do racers
have to tackle technical motocross tracks, but they
are also put to the test in the deserts of California
and Arizona, as well as the rugged forests of Washington
and Utah. A typical layout would be to incorporate an
existing motocross track, then venture out into a 4
to 8 mile loop in the desert or forest! Races are run
anywhere from one hour in the amateur classes to 2 hours
in the pro and pro am classes. This form of racing is
very spectator friendly, as the riders are within view
for much of the race. Race entries in 2006 averaged
anywhere from 450 to 1000, making this one of the fastest
growing series in the country.
The youth classes are also an important part of the
WORCS program, and the turnout has been huge. The youth
classes usually run a shortened version of the track
between 2 and 4 miles depending on venue.
The nine round 2007 ATV WORCS season kicks off on
January 27th in Surprize, AZ at Speedworld Motocross
Park with the season finale on the weekend of November
17TH in Taft, CA at Honolulu Hills Raceway. Multi-time
WORCS ATV pro champion, Duncan Racing’s Doug Eichner
will be back again to defend his title with runner-up
Golden West Cycle /Epic Racing’s Josh Frederick
chasing after his first championship.
ATVriders.com will once again provide race reports,
photos, and videos from all nine rounds of the 2007
WORCS ATV series with Brittany & Roy Bloodworth
