LONDON, KY (5/21/2006)
- John Natalie, Jr. and Daryl Rath
remain undefeated in WPSA PowerSports ATV Championship
Tour competition, winning their Pro Class races
during Sunday's ITP Daniel Boone ATV Championship,
Round 2 of this season's Championship. The race
was held at the Daniel Boone MX, and was part
of a double championship weekend, which kicked
off the 2006 season.
Rath (No. 67 Rath Racing/Arctic Cat) won the QuadTerrain
Challenge Pro Stock event, while Natalie (No. 67 Elka
HMF Shift/Honda) won the SuperQuad Pro 450 QuadMX
Series race. Both won their respective classes in
Round 1, held yesterday.
Sunday's races will be telecast on ESPN2 on Sunday,
June 11 at 1 p.m. EDT.
Harold Goodman (No. 708 American Honda Houser Racing
Curtis Sparks/Honda) took the holeshot at the start
of the SuperQuad Pro 450 final, earning the $1,000
Quad Magazine Holeshot award, but Natalie, coming
from third, was on the charge. Natalie took second
on lap three, behind Jeremiah Jones (No. 2 Suzuki
Yoshimura Fly/Suzuki). He then passed Jones on the
next lap, taking the lead for good. Jones dogged Natalie
during the waning laps, but settled for second. Jason
Lubergh (No. 8 Suzuki Yoshimura BKT Fox Shocks Shift/Suzuki)
grabbed third on lap five when Goodman spun out. Goodman
finished 15th.
"The race was great," said Natalie, who
now holds a commanding lead in the SuperQuad Pro 450
Riders' Points and has squarely placed Honda atop
the Manufacturers' standings. "I think it was
great for the fans and ESPN2 is going to roll with
this thing. When people see this kind of racing, they'll
be hooked. It was a nail biter the whole time. "I
had a great weekend; I couldn't ask for anything more,"
added Natalie. "I think the Series is great.
I'm hoping it goes of huge and gives the kids coming
up something to shoot for."
Jones recovered from injuries suffered in an off
Saturday to net the runner-up finish. "This feels
like a win for me today," said the Bowling Green,
Ky. resident. "It felt good to get up with these
guys and be competitive. I think the WPSA is really
going to take off. I really enjoyed the weekend; everything
ran smoothly and I'm looking forward to coming to
Echeconnee."
Rath, meanwhile, came out atop a veritable survival
of the fittest in the Pro Stock QuadTerrain Challenge
race. Rath took the lead on lap five of the 12-lap
final when then-leader William Yokley (No. 23 Arctic
Cat) and Scott Kilby (No. 227 Can-AM Maxxis Moose/Can-Am)
were slowed in the log crawl section of the course.
From there, Rath ran unchallenged. Yokley was second,
ahead of Kilby.
"Things went awesome," said Rath, who leads
the Pro Stock Class Riders' Championship and has put
Arctic Cat atop the Manufacturers' Championship. "We
had to dig in deep again today. Sometimes you think
about giving up when you're that far behind at the
start of the race, but it all worked out. Everybody
did their part. "The Tour ran the races on schedule
and it's really nice to know when you're racing,"
added Rath. "It's a good deal."
"This is huge," said Kilby. "I never
had a bunch of four-wheel-drive quads around me racing.
We came here to have a good time and we wound up on
the podium. We had some fun, too. This was an awesome
track and I think this Series is really going places."
