Glen Helen - Round Two - Race
Report - Continued
New for 2007, the top five riders
automatically get the first gate picks, but instead
of drawing spoons for the remaining gate picks, Sunday
morning practice lap-times are utilized to determine
the remaining gate picks, which is now possible with
the all new transponder scoring system adopted from
AMA Pro Racing, which provides lap-times from all
the races including the amateur classes, and the lap-times
are available online at www.atvmotocross.com.
Kory Ellis wasted no time warming up as he quickly
made his presence known by recording the fastest practice
lap-time of 3:16:431, which edged out Joe Byrd, Pat
Brown, Dustin Wimmer, and Chad Wienen all within one
second of Ellis, and the stage was set for the start
of Moto One.
With the drop of the gate, the start of Moto One was
underway and Harold Goodman and Joe Byrd lead the charge
down the long straight-away heading into Talladega turn
with Byrd edging out Goodman for the ATVriders.com Holeshot
Award with Jeremy Lawson, Keith Little, and Dustin Wimmer
all in hot pursuit.

By the end of the first lap, Kory Ellis charged he
way through the pack and finally past Lawson to take
over the second spot behind Joe Byrd, but it would be
short lived as John Natalie Jr worked his way around
Ellis on lap two and began to apply the pressure to
Byrd.

#7
Joe Byrd jumping the inside of the track, which
fueled a controversy |
With the race barely underway, controversy was stirring
in the pits after Joe Byrd created a new line on the
track by using the edge of the track to jump over the
inside of a 90 degree turn, which had many speculating
if it was against the rules, and it wouldn’t take
long before John Natalie Jr was following Joe Byrd through
the same line as he was trying to reel in Byrd, and
the newly formed line apparently was saving some time
around the marathon long track as the pair pulled away
from the pack.
Meanwhile, Chad Wienen began his charge through the
pack and moved his way up into fifth place behind Dustin
Wimmer and Kory Ellis. Doug Gust early charge was slowed
when he stalled his LTR450 in lap three, which dropped
him back to 13th place, and Russell Shumaker suffered
the same fate when he collided into the rear of Dustin
Nelson, which left him sitting for nearly thirty seconds.

Kawasaki’s Josh Creamer and Jason Luburgh both
started at the rear of the pack with Creamer making
a run up to 9th place while Luburgh had a rock lodge
in his front caliper, which locked up his front wheel,
and he finished out the Moto in 12th place.
Out front, Natalie Jr pressured Byrd to the finish
line with Byrd holding onto the lead to claim the first
Moto win with Suzuki’s Kory Ellis claiming the
third spot followed by Wimmer and Wienen rounding out
the top five.
