–The ATVA Motocross Nationals made its return to
Ballance Moto X for round seven of the 2007 racing season.
Last year, Ballance Moto X served as the final round of
the season, and the nearly 500 that attended where treated
to one of the best race tracks of the year and an incredible
battle for the championship between Joe Byrd and Doug
Gust with Byrd edging out Gust for his first Pro ATV Championship.
For 2007, the battle is on between Joe Byrd and Jeremy
Lawson for the Championship with Suzuki’s Doug Gust
focusing his attention on the 2007 WPSA title.
With the Blue Grass National held on Memorial Day weekend
this year, many racers took advantage of the holiday
weekend and arrived early as the event attracted one
of the largest crowds this season with 411 racers signing
up to compete. The Ballance family was up to the challenge
to keep the track in nearly perfect condition all weekend
with track owner, John Ballance, applying tons of saw
dust to the track since last year to hold the moisture
through a hot weekend of racing, and 7 Time GNCC National
Champion, Bill Ballance, along with his brother, Brandon,
where on hand as well assisting John with the track
maintenance.

The Ballance Moto X track is one of the more technical
tracks on the tour with a series of doubles, triples,
and table tops, so Friday many racers took to the track
attempting to master terrain before Saturday’s
Motos. The “Six-Pack” heading to the checkered
flag produced its fair share of carnage as riders attempted
to double, double, double to the finish line with several
losing the rhythm after the first double and grabbing
a taste of a dirt and sawdust mix. Fortunately, there
weren’t many serious injuries and the section
was tamed down before the races.
The Pros weren’t immune to the track either as several
Pros went down trying to master the landing of the huge
camelback tabletop with Joe Byrd hitting the panic button
during Saturday’s Pro Practice when he overshot
the landing and flat landed the jump, which sent him tumbling.
When asked what happened, Byrd explained, he was attempting
the inside line for the first time and gave it too much
throttle. John Ragon would also go down during practice,
but both riders were alright besides being shook up along
with some bruises.

Saturday Evening, Parts Unlimited Moose Racing hosted
a Free Chicken Fajita Dinner for everyone in attendance,
which was a hit as hundreds lined up for the feast,
which was well worth the wait.
For the first time in two rounds, the Pro lineup experienced
a boost in attendance with thirteen Pros signing up
and among the new faces were Cale Downen, Brock Lyons,
Greg Meeks, and John Ragon. Both Suzuki’s Doug
Gust and Dustin Wimmer were in attendance as well, but
they watched from the sidelines with Jeremiah Jones.
The pair was in town training at Jeremiah’s house
located just a few miles from the track in Bowling Green.
