Chris Borich
|
For Suzuki mounted Chris Borich, the woes continue.
Failing to start quick forced him into the first
turn directly as the majority of XC1 was diving
away from a pile up. Borich was sent spinning
and got all out of shape, forcing him to start
back in the pack yet again scoring the 1st lap
in the 18th spot. A wreck added to his misfortune
however he wouldn’t quit and kept driving
forward as he picked off rider after rider finishing
the day in the 8th spot. A chat with Chris after
the race had him pondering the tracks this season
and explaining how stiff the level of competition
is.
“If you don’t get a good start,
you just aren’t going to run these guys
down. There are 5 or 6 riders this year that
can run away with the race making it even tougher
if you have a problem” Borich stated.
Chris went on to talk about the tracks and
how even everyone is allowing no real advantages
to pass as the weather or track design have
left little room for making up time. This sentiment
was echoed by other riders, not as an excuse,
but as an honest reflection of how things are
shaping up. Hearing that the level of competition
is equal just makes for great racing and no
rider should ever be looked down upon for battling
at these events.
Jeff Pickens was on fire as the 2008 season
started, scoring respectable finishes in some
tough events. Round 4 threw Pickens his first
DNF and the following 2 rounds had him finishing
at the back of the XC1 pack. The saying you
can’t keep a good man down stood true
as he battled his way to a 9th place finish
at a fast and rough track. Crossing the scoring
line in 18th on lap 1 showed he had his work
cut out as he pushed on to score a top 10 finish.

Taylor Kiser

The final spot in the XC1 top 10 would fall
to Taylor Kiser. Kiser was involved in a wreck
at turn 1 and things did not get any better
as he wrecked hard at the 2 mile marker on the
first lap. The wreck was hard enough that after
the race it was discovered his helmet was cracked
however he was not feeling anything besides
beat up from 2 hours of grueling competition.
Taylor did describe a steering issue that he
fought with that he felt attributed to a finish
he could have improved upon, and knowing the
diligence of Team FRE, it will be attended to
and not be an issue in the future.

Adam McGill

For fellow FRE KTM rider Adam McGill, a broken
sprocket ended his run to the podium at the
8 ½ mile marker on the last lap. McGill
was the leader on lap 1, remained in the 2nd
spot on lap 2 and fell to fourth on lap 3 but
had plenty of racing left as he planned his
final assault on the riders in front of him.
Instead of smiling with pride from atop the
podium, or at least scoring another top 5, McGill
would be sidelined as his XC1 competitors passed
him by, all knowing the feeling he was dealing
with. An after race interview had McGill upset,
but in a “that’s racing” state
of mind. This kid knows he has what it takes,
has proven it, and knows he will be back upfront
at the next round!
Round 8 of the Can Am GNCC series will head
to Yadkinville NC for the next installment of
this exciting season. Tight and twisting, a
fan favored creek jump and the fevered pitch
of extreme competition will greet all those
in attendance!
