Race winner Shawn Hess was battling throughout
the event and did not have a good idea of what
position he was actually in for much of the
race. “I really thought Taylor Kiser had
gotten out there and got away with it,”
recalled Hess. “I just started riding
hard, and the next thing I know we come through
in third. I just kept my head down and picked
off second, and I happened to be in first coming
through the checker. It was just awesome. We
had some great battlin’ goin’ on.”
Hess picked up win number one in his first trip
to the OMA Nationals series. The Elka Suspension
IMS Maxxis Honda racer said the track was “nice
hills, boggy areas, creeks, rocks, roots. You
name it; it had a good mix of it.” The
Texan also indicated they will be competing
in the entire 2009 OMA season. This should be
great news for spectators, as the addition of
Hess to the high caliber group of OMA regulars
will kick up the excitement level another notch.

Taylor Kiser also put his Houser Racing Hyper
Wheels Yamaha near the front all day, but he
simply could not keep it out front. “I
got to lead a couple times,” said the
Tire Balls Yamaha racer. “I just kept
making little bobbles, running in to lappers,
whatever it may be. I got off to an alright
start. I worked my way through the pack. I got
to the lead on the first lap and came to a bottleneck.
They re-routed the track. Everybody got around
me,” stated Kiser. “We charged hard
all day. I led for a while. I was real happy
to be able to come out here and race the race.”
According to Kiser, “it was a good track.
I mean, he put on a good race. I can’t
say nothin’ but good things about it.
It was a lot of fun.” He said “coming
here, you know, there’ no pressure or
anything, just people out to have a good time.”

The first round of another OMA Nationals season
is in the books and we have a new winner and
some new faces onboard. The series continues
to attract talented racers with a mix of tight
technical tracks and a family oriented, laid
back atmosphere. Bill Gusse and his team maintain
a unique product in the motorsports business.
The events are exciting for racers and spectators
alike, and the tracks provide a challenge that
is hard to find in today’s high volume,
high speed marketplace. The Parts Unlimited
OMA Nationals series is a bit of a throwback
to the “early days” of woods racing.
