Rob Weis tops Scott Acerbis OMA Round 9 ATV Podium

OMA Round 9:

Overall Winner Rob Weis
The OMA Coyote XC in Waukon, Iowa proved to be a good experience for Honda mounted Rob Weis. The Stratford, Wisconsin rider finished ahead of teammate Jonathan Hughes on another Honda 450R. Weis said the race was “real good.” Mistakes by a couple riders ahead of him gave an opportunity to pass for the lead and ride clean for a victory. “The first couple laps we had a few mistakes here and there,” recalled Weis. “One guy went over the bars on a log. Another guy got stuck on a log. Otherwise it was a pretty clean race. The last couple laps I kind of put it on reserve a little bit to make sure I wouldn’t get a flat tire or anything, just watching where I go on the rocks. Once I had a good lead I didn’t want to blow it.”

Second place went to Z1R Helmets sponsored Jonathan Hughes after seven laps of the rock strewn course. He was one of the riders who lost his opportunity ahead of Weis. Hughes had a good holeshot and ran well until he made a mistake that let Weis, Kenneth Staake, and John Stehlik get by. Stehlik put his Yamaha in the lead until a crash he described as “hit the log, went over the bars, landed right on my back.” After recovering from his crash, Stehlik fought to catch up but “went down in to a ravine and bent a tie rod.” The miscue by Stehlik left Yamaha mounted Kenneth Staake in the lead and he completed the first lap ahead of the pack. Lap two completed with Staake just two seconds ahead of Weis. Staake said his race “started good, but then it went the other way, very badly. Coming in to a ninety plus degree corner going up a hill I rolled it. I lost about four positions while I was laying underneath my quad until somebody came around and pulled it off me.” Staake finished his day in fifth place with seven laps. Hughes now rode in second place and was pacing himself so he “wouldn’t screw up.” Weis started pulling away and Hughes said “I was, like, ah let him go.” Hughes crossed the finish line checkpoint one minute behind Weis.

The final podium spot went to another Honda 450R with Jake Voss aboard. Voss is the current MXC series pro atv points leader. He said the track was “pretty rocky and hilly. I wasn’t really used to it compared to what we usually ride, (but) it was a good.” Voss developed some huge blisters (photo) on his hands during the event but he still said it was “a good time.”

Another MXC series rider just missed the podium in fourth place. Matt Lindle brought his Honda in ahead of A ATV riders Cody Julson and Chris Safar who took fifth and sixth overall. Lindle said the course was “challenging, very tiring. It was fun though.” Seventh place was captured by Brad Petersen from the B ATV class. Larry Falls and Luke Olberding arrived in eighth and ninth place with the highest finishing Yamaha rides of the day. Tenth place overall belongs to Justin Williams from the B ATV class aboard another Honda.

Waukon, Iowa was the location for the OMA Coyote XC. The local boys from Colsch Cycle along with the land owner and his son helped Bill and Monte Gusse set up another challenging and exciting OMA race course. The track was difficult, but everyone said they had fun. That is the name of the game. This is off road racing.
