Coal Miner XC Win! - Page 2
The course was holding up well during the race, and the
layout made for no bottlenecks and plenty of alternate
lines. The tight sections stayed consistent, and the mudholes
and hillclimbs had spectators ready to help the riders
out. After circulating behind Sommers for most of the
race, I turned it up for a final run at the last podium
spot. Just before the start of the final lap, I tried
to make a pass on two lappers down one of the long field
straightaways. I moved over to the right of the main line,
and hit the kicker to end all kickers. The impact hit
me harder than Chuck Liddell on steroids. If I ever release
a greatest hits CD, this one will be the title track.
I just went into corpse mode after the hit, and dumped
off the side of the quad like a sack of potatoes. I got
up in the dust cloud and couldn’t see my quad. Another
rider stopped to ask me if I was okay, and I got him to
locate my quad. It had gone over and down a hill, and
wedged under a wire fence. It was so far away from the
spot where I had augered into the ground that I hopped
on the back of his quad, and he gave me a ride over to
it! I was frantically trying to salvage a good finish,
and extracted the machine from the fence and took off.
I kept going even though my throttle thumb felt like it
was detached from the rest of my body, running on pure
adrenaline.

Chris Jenks put in a great ride and took the win, with
Taylor Kiser keeping him honest in second and Brandon
Sommers coming in third. Jeff Pickens finished in fourth,
and I rounded out the top five. I was happy to salvage
a decent finish after my crash, and had a fun time riding
with all the great racers that were in attendance.
The next round of the series is the Moose Run in Morrison,
Illinois; and I’m looking to get back on the podium.
See you there!
