Memphis, MO - The fifth round of the
Offroad Motorcycle and ATV Nationals took place in the
rolling hills of the Hickory Hunt Club facility in Memphis,
Missouri. The track was laid out by legendary trail master
Bill Gusse, and included some tight wooded sections and
a technical stream bed rock run. The motocross track located
on the property was incorporated into the loop, and would
provide plenty of passing opportunities while allowing
riders to air it out on the many jumps around the course.
The area had not received any rain for a while, and
the trails and mx track were dryer than a popcorn fart.
Temperatures were up in the nineties, and the cloudless
skies let the sun beat down on me like nuclear fallout.
I packed plenty of ice in my Camelback and headed up
to signup, where I wasn’t sure if I actually saw
tumbleweeds blow by or if it was a mirage.
The OMA are always well organized, and this event was
no exception with no hangups in the event schedule or
scoring. A perfect track layout made for no bottlenecks
or lost riders, and a massive water truck was on hand
to keep the dust down in the pit areas and the start
straight.

Andy Lagzdins & #1 Rob Zimmerman make contact
heading into turn one with Zimmerman receiving
the worst as he highsided |
The Pro Class went off with Honda mounted Spencer Dickerson
taking the holeshot ahead of Rob Zimmerman and I. As
we rounded the first turn, Rob and I made contact and
Rob highsided. Spencer was throwing a ton of dust in
the air, and he got away from me immediately. Rob had
remounted quickly after his first turn tumble, and by
the end of the first lap, he was right up on me. I managed
to hold him off for a few miles, but he took a tighter
line in a sweeper and I never saw him again.

Rob
Zimmerman quickly recovered from his first turn
tumble and tracked down Lagzdins by the 2nd lap
to make the pass and move into 2nd place |
Spencer
Dickerson held the the lead for 7 laps, but with
just two laps remaining, Zimmerman was able to
make the pass and take over the lead |
The highlight of the course for me was a rolling field
section that had us wide open in top gear over hills
that dropped out like a roller coaster ride. There is
nothing like running a modified 450 at full song, bouncing
off the rev limiter while soaring through the air until
landing with the throttle still pinned like somebody
put a zip-tie on it.
Spencer was running out front for the majority of the
race, when near the finish he came under pressure from
the charging Zimmerman. Spencer eventually pulled over,
letting Rob go on to his first win of the 2007 season.
The margin of victory was only 14 seconds, in the closest
finish of the year so far. I held on to finish third,
with Dillon Abernathy and Michael Critz rounding out
the top five.
