The woods sections of the course were very
technical, and I was constantly threading
the needle through trees so tight that at
least twice a lap my rear tires would be rubbing
on both sides and climbing up and popping
through them. These sections did not offer
many passing opportunities, but the much wider
whooped out parts of the course offered plenty
of passing lines if you could blitz through
the whoops faster than the other guys. Rob
and I had worked through the field by the
second lap, and while I was following him
he sunk his front wheel in a deep rut and
I went around to take the lead. As I exited
the scoring tent, Rob was coming around the
final turn. I slid into my pit area, and my
team refueled me and got me back out in front
of Rob in seconds flat. I tried to stay smooth
and consistent, knowing I didn’t have
to win to stay in front of the points race.
I made it through the lappers quickly, and
managed to finish first with a forty second
lead. Rob came in right behind me, and he
was happy to have a fairly uneventful race
with no mechanical issues. Rob Weis was back
on the podium in third, with Matt Lindle in
fourth.
This race will go down as one of my all-time
favorites, with a fun and challenging course,
close racing, and perfect weather. To win
an event with so much history behind it makes
it that much more satisfying. The final race
of the year takes place in Kentucky on November
17, and I hope to see you there!
