- Dwight Hughes claimed the UTV Expert win at the

Colorado. Round one winner, Chris Deshon claimed

The second round of the RMURA racing series was
held at CORE located just about an hour east of
Denver. Heavy rain moved in during the week, which
cancelled practiced on Friday, but the sun came
out and the track came around by Saturday morning,
which made for near perfect SxS / ATV racing condtions
over the modified five mile course layout carved
out of the 20-mile circuit known for its desert,
motocross and technical sections.

Mountain UTV Racing Series

For Dwight Hughes, this is his first year of
SxS Racing, and after winning the opening round
of the RMURA series in the SxS Sportsman 1000
class, he made the jump up to the Expert 1000
class for round two, and he once again claimed
the top spot on the podium after getting off the
line in a second place start on the front row.

Dwight Hughes took over the lead after
a couple laps
|
After chasing after the leader several laps,
Hughes inherited the lead when the leader pitted
for fuel. “I just went out, had fun, and we were
cruising. I just stayed with him, he pulled off
and I took the lead. It was a great race. I had
a lot of fun,” said Hughes.
“It was a good track,” added Hughes. “There was
a little bit of everything: short track, motocross
and desert. I’m looking forward to racing in the
next round closer to home in Grand Junction”

held on to claim his first Expert SxS
Class Win & his second win of the
season in the Rocky Mountain UTV Racing
Series

Hughes credited RCR Performance Parts for the
victory. The crew from RCR was at the track during
the weekend. “This made for a couple of good wins,”
said Hughes. “I couldn’t have done this if it
wasn’t for RCR.”
Round one expert class winner, Chris Deshon,
grabbed the holeshot from the first of the three-row
12-car start, but he started to run out of fuel
after three laps, so he had to make a pit stop
and handed the lead and eventual victory over
to Hughes.

Deshon took the blame for running out of fuel
late in the race. “I thought it was full, but
it wasn’t completely topped up,” said Deshon.
“We led from the start, but on lap three, the
car started sputtering for fuel, so we stopped
to put fuel in. With two to go, I tried to chase
him down, but there just wasn’t enough time. We
won’t make that mistake again.”

claim the 2nd spot

Deshon isn’t new to racing and won the championship
at the Lucas series in 2014, but he is excited
to closer to home in the new Rocky Mountain UTV
Racing Association series. “This is just easier
for us. We don’t have to drive eight hours to
Utah every weekend, so racing in this series is
very convenient.”
Fisher climbed through the field after starting
last, and then nursed his machine home after breaking
an axle. “I ended up last at the start,” said
Fisher. “Luckily everyone took the step-up well,
so we just rolled with it. After one lap, I was
able to get past some people. I lost an axle halfway
through the race. I pulled into the pits, they
jerked the axle out and told me to keep going.
All the right hand turns were a little slower
than the left hand turns.”

Fisher said he’d definitely be back. “I saw this
on Facebook,” said Fisher. “It’s local, so we
gave it a shot. We had a lot of fun today.”
Mitch Ray and John Cianci rounded out the top
five in the RMURA Expert 100 SxS Class at round
two.

The Rocky Mountain UTV Racing series is committed
to the future of the sport, so they offer Kids
UTV racing, and Connor Hughes claimed his first
win of the season after a dramatic race to the
finish.

Hughes got off to the early lead, but he got
out in the mud and dropped back into the third
spot, but he remounted a charge and was able to
reclaim the lead and the win among the youth ranks,
which added another win for the father (Chris
Hughes), son team.

Zavier Galaviz claimed the second spot on the
podium followed by Camry Brown after a tight race
all the way to the finish. Tanner Kammerdiener
held the lead at one point, but a mistake dropped
him back to fourth place after an impressive early
run up front for the first round winner.

While many may think the RMURA offers just SxS
/ UTV racing, they also have several classes for
ATV racers with a 55 minute long race held in
the morning, so hopefully the word spreads and
more racers come out for the next round of racing
in July.
Brian Barsh dominated the newly formed ATV A
class. After taking the holeshot, he dominated
the event, holding off Megan Demers for the victory.

overall & A class win
|
Barsh was pleased with his victory and is looking
for the ATV class to grow considerably: “The track
was nice, and the weather was nice; I just kept
it floored as much as I could,” said Barsh. “I
saw this on Facebook. They’re catering to the
quads more and more. This thing is going to be
huge.”
Demers said the race was a learning experience
for her: “I was keeping up with him on the first
couple of laps, and I thought he was messing with
me,” said Demers with a laugh. “Later on, I was
losing ground in some of the corners. Now I know
where I have some more work to do.”

Megan Demers
finished in the 2nd Spot
|
Devries had a difficult start and was pleased
with the podium finish and win in the ATV B class.
“I stalled it and messed up the start,” said Devries.
“Man, this was fun. I felt really good. It was
a fun track. I’m getting better and better.”

The Rocky Mountain UTV Racing Association will
be back in action with both UTV and ATV racing
on July 11th in Grand Junction, CO, and the series
is looking to attract some competitions from Utah,
Nevada, and California ATV and SxS racers.
