In the Pro ATV 24 class, Pro GNCC racer Andy Lagzdins
was racing in his first ever Baja 1000 along with
teammates Tom Wright, and Jim Stack aboard their
#103A Honda 450R. “It was a really different
experience for me, but I love that kind of terrain
and I also really like the endurance type of races,
so I had a really good time,” Andy said. “I
got to pre run two sections of the track, so I knew
what to expect there, but the final section I was
to ride, I didn’t get to pre-run, and of course
I had to ride that section in the dark!” Andy
                              said with a laugh.

Tom Wright's BAJA 1000 Honda TRX 450R ATV
race machine | The 103A team was leading up until the 370 mile
marker. “I got lost somewhere around the
370 mark and went ten miles out of my way,”
said Jim Stack. “I finally got back on track
but that made us lose a lot of time and at the
390 mark, we got passed by Craig Christy’s
team,” he said disappointedly. Another thing that cost the 103A team precious
time was during the night when Tom Wright had
taken over. Wright was doing well but ended up
getting sideswiped by a trophy truck. Luckily,
Tom wasn’t hurt, but the too-close encounter
caused their lights to ground out and Tom had
to ride to their next pit stop without any lights.
Their setbacks allowed Craig Christy’s team
to finish first in their class with a time of
16:57, while Wright’s team finished in second
place with a time of 17:51.

Craig Christy Team would secure the win
with a time of 16:57:53, which also gave
the team the 24 Class Points Championship
over 104a Benjamin Lopez finishing in 5th
place in the BAJA 1000 | The
103a Team from back East made an impressive
run in the BAJA 1000 finishing in 2nd place
in their first combined team effort, and
they will be back in 2009 to go after the
win | Despite the little bit of trouble they had, Andy
Lagzdins of the 103A team still had a great time.
“I had a lot of fun. It was a really great
experience. It’s really hard to pick out
just one thing that really stands out about the
Baja 1000 because it all stands out, but one of
my favorite things about it was the terrain changes.
It just seemed to have a little bit of everything.
It was really something and I can’t wait
to do more desert racing,” said Andy, who
will be teaming up with Craig Christy to run the
entire SCORE series for next season. |
