Wayne Matlock would take the 1a quad back from
Miller for the final 36 miles to the finish line
and their second win of the season.

|
Wayne
Matlock started the race on the #1a Honda
TRX700XX ATV & finished it as well,
& after a dominating performance, he
enjoyed an interview session |
“The race was really good. It was definitely
a challenging course. We had some problems in
the beginning of the course and had some slip-ups
in the pits. After that, we put our heads down
and everybody did their job and here we are. It
was a pretty beat-up course this time but it was
fun. I’d like to thank all of my teammates
for getting the quad back up there and working
hard and got us up into first place” said
Matlock.

#5a
Javier Robles Team would cross the finish
line 50 minutes behind Matlock Racing to
take the 2nd Overall Finish |
The 5a quad of Mexico’s Javier Robles would
finish in second 50 minutes behind Matlock with
Craig Christy on the 2a quad rounding out the podium.
Robles and Matlock chatted about the programmer
issues after the race. It might have been a closer
finish but mechanical issues are part of racing,
especially in Baja.
In the Class 24 race, it was the 117a quad of Roberto
Villabos who crossed the finish line first battling
all the way back from 17th place to take the win.
Jorge Acosta said, “When Roberto was out there
around race mile 160 or 170, he passed every single
(Class 24 ATV) but then he fell and we had a little
problem with the suspension. We got that fixed and
had no other problems. The engine worked great.
This is my first SCORE win in Baja and it feels
good.”

#103a
Honda TRX450R ATV Racing team of Moto X
Nutrition racers Brandon Brown, Jorie Williams,
Mike Kelley, Kenny Sanford, & Nick Nelson
grabbed 2nd place in their class despite
fuel issues partway thru the course |
The Moto X Nutrition team of Brandon Brown, Jorie
Williams, Mike Kelley, Kenny Sanford and Nick Nelson
on the 103a quad would take 2nd place after losing
an hour due to running out of gas. The team had
a six to seven minute lead at race mile 100 before
their fuel system began to fail. “Going over
the summit we lost the seal on our dry brake fuel
tank and leaked a bunch of fuel out” reported
Brandon Brown.
The quad sputtered to a halt a mile and a half
from their pit near the dry lake bed at Laguna
Salada, and Jorrie Williams’ will to win
took over as he pushed the quad through the lake
bed until the team spotted him. After the repair,
the 103a quad was in tenth place and lost an hour
total. “The quad ran great,” said
Brown. “Everyone rode well and we ended
up finishing 13 minutes behind the leader.”
Dave Scott managed to start the race on the 2a
class 25 quad and finish on the 100a class 24
quad allowing Christy Racing to round out the
class 24 podium as well. “Craig Christy
started the race on the class 24 quad but one
of the racers crashed on the summit. By the time
I got on to finish the race near race mile 370
the quad was pretty beat up,” said Scott.
“I was amazed at the obstacles and jumps
that people had built during the day in the wash
that leads out of town. I started the morning
race on the class 25 quad and the course was completely
different when I came back in later that day on
the class 24 quad,” said Scott. The class
24 team consisted of Craig Christy, Dave Scott,
Jason Wade, Joe Bernal and Paul Velasquez.

Rob
Ransford, Jim Winiarski, Joe Rice, Mike
Rodgers, and David Bailey pulled off the
win on their Can-Am Outlander ATV in the
Utility Class |
While
the #200a Guillermo Berenguer, Alex Gomez,
Jose Ramirez, and Julio Banda took the win
in the in the Sportmans ATV Class |
In the Utility class it was the Can-am of Rob Ransford
accompanied by Jim Winiarski, Joe Rice, Mike Rodgers
and David Bailey taking the checkers and in the
Sportsman ATV class it was Guillermo Berenguer,
Alex Gomez, Jose Ramirez and Julio Banda who took
the win.
Five UTV’s entered the race but only the Yamaha
Rhino piloted by Thomas and Daniel Graves finished
giving them the win in the Sport UTV Class Of
the thirty eight ATV’s that began the race,
twenty two were able to withstand the terrain
and brutal conditions of the Baja Peninsula. Matlock
Racing retains their lead in the class 25 points
chase as does the class 24 points leader Brandon
Brown. Racers have a short break over the summer
months but will return to Ensenada in November
for the Baja 1000. Many racers will use this break
to heal and recover but for those looking to claim
a victory in Baja, the off time is a chance to
prepare for one of the most grueling races on
the planet, the Baja 1000.
