Hollister, California - Round number
5 of the WORCS series was held at Hollister Hills
where riders were in for quite a few challenges
on the 3.5 mile course, but those challenges didn’t
stand in the way of rookie Pro ATV racer Beau Baron
who went on to take his first Pro WORCS win.
This was the first time for Hollister Hills to
play host to the WORCS series and all though the
track was little on the short side, it was not
without its technical areas.
The weather conditions over the weekend were the
complete opposite from what racers encountered
at the last round in Washington State. Instead
of dealing with snow and freezing temperatures,
racers had to endure scorching temps that reached
into the 100’s and dry conditions, which
produced a lot of dust that proved to be more
than a little unnerving for even the Pros in a
few sections of the track. “There was this
one area that was a really steep off-camber section
that went all along the hillside. It was nicknamed
the ‘Valley of Doom’,” recalled
Tim Shelman.

With
Temps in the 100's, many racers couldn't
wait for the checkered flag for a cool refreshing
drink, and some of the youth ATV racers
were lucky enough to head to the beach after
a long day of racing and cool off with friends |
The Valley of Doom was not the only section that
fray nerves over the course of the day. Another
section of the track was a narrow single line
that ran along a ridgeline with a steep cliff
that claimed a number of victims over the weekend.
“The cliff section was super dusty and you
couldn’t even see, so you just had to take
things slow in that area,” said Can-Am/Motoworks’
Brandon Smith who managed to avoid any major catastrophes
in those knarly sections, but did have some complications
otherwise.
As the Pro class left the line in the main event,
Dustin Nelson and Mike Machado were handlebar
to handlebar going into the first turn, but Nelson
managed to edge out Machado and take the lead.
“I hugged the inside line and got in front
of Mike,” said Nelson. Following 2nd place
Machado was Dat’s Racing’s Robbie
Mitchell, Can-Am’s Josh Frederick, Polaris’s
Doug Eichner and privateer Beau Baron. Last off
the line was Brandon Smith, who blew out his clutch
on the parade lap, but chose not to fix it before
the race.
