Lake Havasu, AZ - Lake Havasu was the
site for Round 3 of the WORCS Series, and the weather
was anything but “Spring Break” weather. Rain
and even snow on the mountains was the forecast, accompanied
by lots of wind. Sean and the WORCS crew designed probably
one of the most technical tracks on the circuit. Due to
the soft sand, it got rutted and whooped out really quick.
Sand washes and switch backs were integral parts of the
course, as well as runs along the beach.
Lots of races were in store for the weekend, including
for the first time, a side by side class. Production
A had 26 riders on the line, and it was Pete Garcia's
Suzuki that got the holeshot and stayed in front for
the win followed by Drew Lattimar and Jon Wayment. Production
B was a battle off the line, with Brian Moreno getting
the holeshot. Brian ended up falling back to fifth place
and the top finishers were Even Heintz, Nick Morano
and Gilbert Flores.
The Women's A class, that started seeing growth in
round one, appears to be getting thin again with only
2 entries. With that familiar pink quad not in the line
up due to a previous injury, it was between Lyn Prosser
and Brittany Bloodworth. Lynn took the hole shot as
Brittany was left on the line with quad problems. She
finally got it started and hit the track, but Lynn checked
out for the win.
Stock C saw some good racing action with two Polaris
Predator's against one Suzuki Z400. It was Larry Mitchell
on one of the Predator's for the holeshot only to get
passed on lap 2 by the #158 of Joe Troche' on the Z400.
Troche' had seemed to pull away from the bigger machines
until lap 5, where he threw his chain. Troche' got the
Suzuki back on the track, but not in time. It was Jarad
Stahl who had made the pass for the win. Troche' took
second with Larry Mitchell in third.
For the Open A class, it was Pete Garcia on the first
place podium again, followed by Jon Wayment and Justin
Waters. Open B was yet another exciting battle with
Cory Trejo taking the checkered, followed by Cody Mitchell
and Josh Pinkston.
The Women B/C class is one that keeps getting bigger
and the race action in this class is definitely one
to watch! With 15 quads on the line, the flag dropped,
and Rene Tompson and Danielle Corbin raced for the holeshot.
Next thing you know, quads literally started flying.
Rene and Danielle had collided, sending quads in all
directions. Rene walked away from this insane crash
with a few bumps an bruises, however, her quad was done.
A broken sub-frame, bent a-arms and a ton of other broken
parts took her out of the race. Danielle was taken to
a nearby hospital with a punctured kidney, but showed
up later that day in good spirits and wanting to ride.
During all of this excitement, the red flag came out
to issue a restart. This time it was Christy McGuffin
and Tia Chandler first off the line battling for the
holeshot. These two aggressive riders were seen battling
back and forth for quite some time. Unfortunately, Tia
was disqualified for inadvertently cutting the track.
She took a wrong turn and ended up on the water truck
route. Oops! Christy took the win and Lacey Nusbaum
placed third. No second place trophy was issued.
Even after all of the excitement from the previous
races, the highlight of the day was the new Side By
Side class. A total of 4 entries made their way to the
starting line, two of them with passengers! One of these
daredevil participants was none other than Multi Jet
Ski Champion Chris "The Fish" Fischetti. Off
the line, Brian Murphy pulled in front, but it was a
battle for the duration of the race between “The
Fish”, Brian, and Anthony Temple. Keeping the
fans on the edge of their seats, these guys were hitting
jumps and turns side by side, sometimes trading paint
and parts! The fourth entry, the Women's team of Kristy
Bennett and Dee Dee Williams, brought their own flair
to the event. Just out there to have a good time, though
they were in last place, you could hear the constant
laughter as they were hitting jumps and bushes the whole
way. Brian Murphy took the checkered, along with a $100
check from Maxxis Tires. He was followed by “The
Fish” in second, Anthony Temple in third, and
last but not least, the “grinnin’ girls”,
Kristy and Dee Dee.
A total of 460 entries was the count for the weekend.
These numbers are pretty good, but there’s always
room for improvement! Come on guys and girls, let’s
bring these numbers up! Be a part of the something great!
Bring everybody you know who has a quad to a WORCS Race.
But, be sure to warn them first. WORCS is addicting!
The next round is April 21-23 in Victorville, CA. You
can pre-register and get more information on WORCS'
web site at www.worcsracing.com.
Happy racing!
