Randy
Roennpagel's 2008 Yamaha YFZ450 ATV
This
quad was built in house at Bikes,Trikes, and
Quads LLC. for Upstate NY motocross
racer Randy Roennpagel, Randy was
the 2011 C class champion in the Twister
Valley Sports Complex Supercross series
located in Fort Plain, NY. For 2012
Randy was looking for a bit more performance
as well as style as he is contending
for the B class championship in the
same series. The quad classes are
open to any size, so rather than spend
several thousand on a full race 450cc
motor he opted to go with a reasonably
priced Athena big bore increasing
his displacement to 480cc , he complimented
it with a set of hotcam stage 3 cams,a
Fmf powerbomb head pipe, and a Dr.
D silencer. This combination works
great with the engine package while
not being overly loud.
For the suspension we went with a
Houser long travel setup , with Elka
stage 3 shocks all the way around
and topped it off with a Elka stage
3 steering damper and a set of Elka
's new shock protectors which really
give the quad a trick look. The Elkas
offered simplicity and performance,
something that is very important to
an up and coming rider , the Houser
Slicast setup in our opinion is the
best on the market, we had no doubts
this would be a excellent setup.
We wanted to match the look to the
performance and its rather hard to
build a unique looking Yamaha YFZ
450 as they've been built in many
variations for several years so we
came up with a color combination that
had yet to be done. We first contacted
BK Performance and sent the frame
other components out for powdercoating
,we then matched it with a set of
laker custom fenders to give it a
more unique look, we topped it all
off with a Quad Tech hump seat and
a Custom set of Bikes,Trikes, and
Quads graphics by G-4 Graphics. To
us the small details add alot to the
overall look of any build, we went
with a Work connection dress up kit,
Moose Throttle cover, ASV Levers and
a Pingel Tether switch , this item
however is about the most durable
well sealed tether switch available
not to mention they offer them in
a 1 1/8" size we neatly mounted
this next to the bar pad. Another
item that was of great concern was
a solid set of nerf bars, Randy had
been through several other brands
of nerf bars but none had stood up,
We decided to go with a set of the
Houser Pro Bounce nerf bars in MX
width the nice thing about housers
design is each part of the nerf is
replaceable and the foot peg offers
a small amount of suspension via a
small rubber ball inside the foot
peg.
Another thing we wanted to address
on the quad was a setup that did not
compromise ground clearance for protection.
We went with a CV4 sprocket guard,
Blingstar Rotor guard , we also mated
it with a Tm Designs chain guide to
keep the chain from derailing (not
pictured), this is important because
the tracks in our area often have
deep ruts as Dirt Bikes run on the
same nights and it is easy to become
high centered if your running a conventional
skid plate.
So far this season the quad has performed
flawlessly, the Elka shocks and Houser
components have allowed Randy to pull
ahead of the competition in the roughest
sections. Randy currently holds the
points lead in the B class.
