Chris Hammett's Honda 400EX
First thing I would like to do is thank everyone that voted for me….It is a real honor to be “Quad of the Month” especially with the competition we had in February. There were some really nice bikes there and believe me I was surprised that I won. I’d also like to thank Blingstar for their sponsorship of “Quad of the Month”…First class company…Another thumbs up goes to Harlen. He has done an excellent job with ATV Riders.com. We got to meet him at Rausch Creek this past year and we all had a ball. Not only the awesome ride for 2 days but the feedbag that Harlen and Pappy put on was outstanding. Just meeting the other riders and members of ATV Riders.com made it a weekend to remember…Looking forward to 2006..
This bike started out in 2003 when I bought it used. We left our Maryland home and went to Ohio to get it sight unseen. It really wasn’t in bad shape but it did need some touches to get it where I wanted it to be. I was only 15 when I got it and I knew that I had to be 16 to race so that gave me some time to do some stuff to it. I was determined to build a nice bike even if I was not racing at this time. It had the Curtis Sparks pipe on it but I shortened it because some of the rivets were loose and I just liked the look of the shorty pipe. I didn’t have a “real” job at the time but I was helping my Dad with a Lawn Maintenance business. That gave me some spending change so I managed to get my Gibson A-arms and PEP shocks. I had a nice Quad Tech hood that I bought but I hit a bad bump on “Henry Hill” at Budds Creek and the damn bike tumbled end over end down the hill destroying my purty Quad Tech hood. So then I got a new Quad Tech hood that my Dad had done up the same color as my frame. Next came some new Douglas 190 wheels and Razor tires along with some new Maier plastic. There are also a number of billet pieces here and there. I have done all of the disassembly and assembly myself for the powder coating by Pappy. He did the Frame, Sub-frame, A-arms, and Front Hubs. Really did an excellent job I might add. BK Performance rules, plus he is just a nice guy to do business with.
We decided that if I was going to race with the big boys (450’s) I needed a little more power. We pulled it down and put the 426 kit in with a “Hot Cams” stage 2 cam. Did some head work, Curtis Sparks timing key, CRF 450 timing chain and a few little tweaks here and there. Then we went to the rear and added the Lonestar axle and a 250R caliper and rotor. We moved the battery under the seat in the new aluminum air box provided by Hellbound Racing. It runs very competitive now. I started racing a little District 7 last year and a small outlaw arena cross type track down in Virginia. This year (2006) I plan on running more District 7 races along with some District 13 races. I would also like to try qualifying for the Nationals at Budds and Birch Creek.
