 I just bought a 2002 Honda 400ex, and I had already replaced the rear brake pads. I was wondering if there is some brake pads that are around the same price as the Honda ones but last longer. I ride a lot of mud and dirt. I live in Canda and they were $70. Please tell me some companies, websites, etc. Thanks.

EBC makes very good brake pads. try either the semi-metallic or severe duty. the kevlar are soft like the stock ones. these are a lot cheaper than stock, about $15US. www.rockymountainatv.com has great prices on them or your local shop (dirt bike or quad) may have them.

the same happened to me, pads on my 400 and 300 both wore out real quick, i purchased severe duty from rocky mountain and so far they are holding up well and provide good stopping power.

do a search on here about parking brake block off. the parking brake on the 400 doesn't work and will wear your pads out. buy your self a block off plate and get rid of it.

buy either EBC or factory honda pads. buy the gold colored metallic pads for the longest life. the parking brake block off is a must have.

It's a federal law that the machine has to have a parking brake. If they didn't some idiot would park his machine on a hill it would roll down the hill over a cliff and they would sue honda for not making a secondary brake besides leaving it in gear just like a car is not suppose to pass inspection without one.

On the fronts, I got about a year of riding on the stock Honda pads. I ride primarily at Wayne National Forest and this place is rough on pads. I clean them after every weekend of riding. I recently replaced them with some Emgo sintered metal pads. Big mistake. They were almost gone after one weekend of riding. I picked up a pair of EBC Sintered Metal pads at my dealer the other night. The guy behind the counter says he uses them for XC racing and likes them. I got them broke in and hopefully they will last. Time will tell. If not, I will go back to the stock Honda pads for the front.

On the rear, I use solid brass pads that I get from I guy on the internet. He makes the pads out of a solid piece of brass. They last 5 times longer than the stock honda pads and had very little effect on the braking ability. Not bad for $35 per set. If anyone is interested, I will post his email address.

I've had good luck with DP pads. I ran several different brands, including the emgo's and didn't have any luck with them. BYW, my experience with emgo was exactly the same, they were GONE after agout 3-4hrs of riding. I have not used the EBC's that I can recall, mainly just the stockers or DP's.

Without a doubt, the biggest thing you can do to make them last longer is the blockoff plate everyone is mentioning. I didn't listen and learned the hard way. I tried just removing the cable first, then the parking break actuating lever that the cable attaches to at the caliper. Didn't work. Just spend the $10-12(USD) and get a block off plate and make your life easier.

400EX Magnum: If we can meet up at Wayne some time I'd like to take a look at those brass pads. I think I'd like to give them a try, but at the moment I still have a new set of DP's on the shelf.

The guy that I get the brass pads from sent me some extra business cards. I will try to put them in my truck and bring them along. If not, I will email you his address. I tried to get a block off plate at my dealer the other day and of course they couldn't find them (I have seen them there before). Who can I order one from? I looked in the Rocky Mountain catalog, but could not find them.

You'll be driving right past ProFab ATV in Lancaster on your way down this weekend, he normally keeps them in stock. $12. Takes less than 5 mins to bolt it on. That's where I got mine. I can email you a map if you want. His place isn't the easiest in the world to get to.

Thanks Scott, but I will be going by Lancaster pretty late in the evening. I don't plan on getting to Wayne until after midnight. I will get one, just haven't been in a hurry. Thanks for the offer though.

Well I installed a set of braking pads to mine and so far so good they made it on a 4hour ride around home and another 80 miles at hatfield last weekend And still looks to be more than 1/2 the pads left.

Does the law state that the bike must be sold with a parking brake, or that it must have one at all times, making taking it off illegal?

Machine have to be sold with parking brake. Now far as my DP pads they held up great at the last race i ran, but not that muddy but i did end up using my rear brakes a heck of alot more than i normally do. Just thought i would update.
