The community and surrounding area will be
able to take advantage of many opportunities
like the OHV trails, Horseback Riding Trails,
Fishing, and wildlife tours.
One of the many things Knott County is trying
to expand is the population of Elk. After a
150 year absence Kentucky began restoring elk
to 16 counties with the help though a partnership
with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Kentucky
Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, and
the Kentucky coal industry. Today there are
over 7,000 free ranging Elk throughout Southeastern
Kentucky. Many can be scene throughout Mine
Made Paradise Park. We were lucky enough to
catch sight of close to one hundred elk the
morning of the ride. Although most in attendance
swore they were no elk, the phase “ Early
bird gets the worm” comes to mind.

This
area is habitat to the largest Elk population
on the Eastern side of the Mississippi
River & we happened upon some during
our journey at the 43,000 Acres ranch
of Mine Made Paradise Park which will
be open this fall to the public |
The Elk are nocturnal animals meaning they
are most abundant at night grazing and about
an hour before or after sunset. Elk can be scene
during the day but if you really want to set
your eyes on this beautiful animal we suggest
rising early and watching the sunrise with the
elk like we did. “Its just amazing how
much the Elk have flourished up here at Mind
Made Paradise Park. The park provides a prefect
environment for the elk to grow.” Debby
Spencer (director of environmental surveys for
elk population in Knott County).
“The Ultimate plan is a tri state initiative
between Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky
to be able to ride Hatfield-McCoy trail system
in West Virginia, Spear Head system in Virginia,
and Kentucky Mountain trail system that all
connect and you buy just one permit to ride”
said Bill Reed. The Mine Made Trail system not
only has huge impact on the economy of Knott
County but it will also provide a gateways to
many kinds of adventure tourism.

This
area has some of the most gorgeous views
in the region & much of the trail
system can be viewd from standing atop
one of the many coal-hills - by this spring,
nearly 60,000 acres of trails will be
open to the public with hopes of connecting
the Hatfield-McCoy trail system in WV
& the Spear Head system in Virginia
to create one, massive riding facility |
We were really impressed with the 40 mile sampling
of the Mine Made Paradise Park we rode on the
Kawasaki units. We were extremely happy that
S.A.M. designed the trails to be side by side
friendly. The Teryx and Mule both were both
a blast to ride down the many trails. Mine Made
Paradise Park is comparable to the Hatfild-
McCoy trails in West Virginia but as but my
Knot County Judge Executive Randy Thompson ““West
Virginia is almost heaven but when you get to
Kentucky you have made it!”
