Galena,
IL (8/6/2011) - As the battle for the
AMA ATV Motocross Championship rages on, Can-Am/Motoworks’
Chad Wienen is still recovering from a horrific
crash that happened while practicing at his
home in Galena, IL in early July. Wienen suffered
multiple injuries including two broken vertebrae
in his back, a devastating, season-ending injury.
Just
before his wreck, Wienen was leading the pro
class in points, and was almost untouchable
in his speed and technique. Wienen was favored
to take his first ever Pro AMA ATV Motocross
Championship, an achievement that has eluded
him for several seasons. While many racers
would be considering putting an end to their
racing careers after such an accident, Chad
Wienen is more determined than ever to come
back stronger and faster than ever in hopes
of taking home the championship.
ATVRiders.com
recently spoke with Chad Wienen to find out
how he was doing and what his plans are for
the future, and we were pleased to find that
he is doing well and more determined than
ever to win.
ATVriders.com:
Chad, it’s been about three weeks since
your crash, how are you feeling? Chad
Wienen: I’m
feeling a lot better. I’ve been able
to get out of the house and it feels good
to be out and about instead of just sitting
at home on the couch.
ATVriders.com:
Are you still having any pain? Chad
Wienen:
No. I’ve actually been off my pain medication
for about a week now. I really don’t
like taking it because I don’t like
the way it makes me feel, so I’m glad
to be done with it.
ATVriders.com:Have
you been making a lot of progress in your
recovery process? Chad
Wienen: Yeah,
it’s been coming along pretty quick.
Every day I’m able to do more things.
When I left the hospital I was actually able
to bend over and tie my shoes, and now I can
actually ride my stationary bike for about
10-15 minutes a day, so I feel like I’m
making good progress.
Chad
Wienen factured his T3 & T4, which
is between the shoulder blades, so he
isn't required to a wear a back brace,
while, Chad Reed, back injury was in
a more mobile area of the back, so he
needs to wear a brace to prevent movement
ATVriders.com:
Do you have to wear a brace or anything like
that? Chad
Wienen:
No. I was lucky that my T-3 and T-4 are between
my shoulder blades and there isn’t a lot
of spinal cord movement in that area, so I don’t
have to wear one. It’s actually kind of
funny because if you were just walking by me
on the street, you wouldn’t even know
that I had been injured. In fact, we went to
dinner the other night with some friends and
they were really amazed to see me up and about
and doing so well. They couldn’t believe
that I had broken my back and was already walking
around.
ATVriders.com:
Rumor has it that you will be at Red Bud.
Chad Wienen: Yes, I plan to go to Red Bud
and support the team.
ATVriders.com:
How are you feeling about going there and
not being able to race? Chad
Wienen:
I’m actually looking forward to it.
I miss being at the track and being around
all the people there. There are a lot of people
that are going to be there that have shown
me so much support during this time and I
really am looking forward to seeing them and
all of the fans that have also shown me so
much support.
