San Diego, CA (7/1/2015) - Mystik
Lubricants / ATVriders.com Mickey Thomas claimed
his first Terracross Championship win at the season
opener of the double header at Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Teammate, Scott McFarland, suffered a back injury
during practice after casing a jump. Joe Sylvester
stepped in at the last minute and notched an eighth-place
finish at round one in the Pro RZR class.

Opening Round

Mickey Thomas got off to a top three start, but
the early leader took himself out on the first
lap, and Thomas made the pass on the other racer
soon after to take over the front spot. Despite
several restarts from wrecks on the technical
track, Thomas held up under the pressure to secure
the season opener win in the Terracross Pro RZR
class.

Championship Pro RZR Win at Round One

“This was our first win in UTV this year,” said
Thomas. “We’ve had bad luck all year in WORCS,
so we are pleased to leave here in the points
chase. The first race definitely played with my
nerves with several restarts, which made it tough.”
The second round didn’t go at well for Thomas
who spun out on the first lap after battling for
the early lead, and at the midway point of the
race, Thomas flipped his Polaris RZR, which sent
him back to a tenth place finish. “In the second
race, I was running on one axle and then I came
over a jump sideways and flipped end over end,”
said Thomas. “We’ll clean up the car, fix the
axle and we’ll be ready for the next race in Minnesota.”

Despite his misfortune in round two, Thomas is
currently second in the Terracross Championship
points race just one point behind the points leader.
McFarland’s injury was enough to keep him sidelined
for the rest of the weekend, so he tapped Sylvester,
who was at the race as a spectator, to drive:
“This was a really short weekend for me,” said
McFarland. “We’re really glad Joey stepped in
and got Mystik Lubricants and all our sponsors
some exposure.”

Scott McFarland was sidelined from racing,
but he stuck around to watch the racing
action with his son, Joey.

With very little experience in UTV racing, Sylvester,
who has raced everything from monster trucks to
late dirt models, put in a spectacular effort
in the first race, finishing eighth.. “I had been
looking into Terracross for a while now,” said
Sylvester, who won one Monster Jam World Title
and holds two Guinness World Records for monster
truck jumps in the “Bad Habit” truck. “I have
a side by side at home, and Terracross has a great
media package, so we just wanted to fill in and
give the fans a good show.”
