The Del Mar Terracross Championship track was
unique, comprising a big double jump in the center
of a horse arena, a slick concrete section, as
well as the “Mystik Mangler” section that consisted
of half-buried tractor tires. In addition, several
cars suffered front differential failures during
qualifying, so the series decided to disable 4WD
for the Pro Main, so everyone would race in two-wheel
drive only, which made the course even more challenging.

in Round One followed by Cole Cottew &
Mickey Thomas
|
Mickey Thomas and RJ Anderson battled from the
start with Anderson grabbing the holeshot and
early lead. Anderson cased a jump in the tire
section and hit a guardrail, handing the lead
to Cole Cottew, and after a few laps, Thomas was
able to take the lead, but it was far from over.
Thomas overcame several red flags to hold the
lead and take the eventual victory.

“RJ was coming over the tires, hit a K-rail and
we were able to get around him,” said Mickey.
“Once we passed him, my nerves were getting to
me. I’d get a good lead and we’d get another red
flag. Then I’d build up another lead and they’d
wave another red flag. It definitely played with
my mind. I was glad to keep the car together and
come out with a win.”

“We’ve had problems all season long,” said Thomas.
“We’ve just had a string of bad luck all season
in other series, so it’s huge to come out here,
run a clean race and get our first win of the
season. This is an extremely unique event. It’s
the largest UTV event out there. To come out here
and win this is huge to me and my sponsors, which
feels awesome.”
