St. Anthony, ID - Located just
50 miles Northwest of Post Falls, ID, the St. Anthony
Sand Dunes is one of the most popular dune riding
destinations west of the Mississippi. This 10,600
acre playground of clear, shifting, white quartz
sand is known for its unique beauty, exceptional
off-road recreational activities and close proximity
to other well-known tourist destinations.
The St. Anthony Sand Dunes is the largest tract
of sand dunes in Idaho, covering approximately
175 square miles. The active dune field extends
northeast for 35 miles and is five miles wide,
with dunes ranging from 50 to 400+ feet tall.
Prevailing winds carried the sand from the nearby
Teton and Snake Rivers and deposited them as dunes
among the hills. While many are familiar with
the area, few who come to partake in off-road
opportunities are unaware that the rounded hills
on the north side of the dunes, the Juniper Buttes,
are actually extinct volcanoes, adding to the
uniqueness of this area.

There are several different access points for the
dunes. Egin Lakes is one of the most popular of
those access points due to its centralized location.
Access to the Egin Lakes area is located midway
along a 15 mile stretch of sand dunes. To the east
are small rolling hills suitable for beginning ATV
riders or families with smaller children. To the
west are the more challenging hills with mountains
of sand up to 425 feet high that challenge even
the highest horsepower machines. Three of the most
popular areas at St. Anthony’s are Choke Cherry
Hill, Devil’s Dune and Thunder Mountain which
are huge hill climbs where many people congregate
to race each other up the steep face of the monster
dunes.
