ATV Motocross Championship
Amateur Race Report
::Continued::
New to the roster this season is the Pro Sport
(Pro-Am/A) class. This class attracts the fastest
amateur racers from both the U.S and other countries
around the world. Traveling from Florida, current
points leader Cam Covil put in am impressive race
to take home the overall win. Covil also extended
his points lead at Unadilla, which is now a 19
point gap to second. Covil placed second in the
first moto, and then came back to win the second
moto, and therefore the overall.

Quebec, Canada racer, Keven Vachon, made the
trip to Unadilla worth his while by taking home
second place overall in Pro Sport. This was only
Keven’s second appearance at an AMA ATV National
event this season. Keven won the first moto, and
scored the quickest lap of the class with a time
of 1:59.516. However, a third place finish in
the second moto gave Keven a second place overall
finish for the weekend.

Third place finisher in the Pro Sport class was
the Argentina rider of Pablo Vera. Vera’s strong
ride aboard his Yamaha earned him 3-4 moto finishes,
respectively. Vera now sits in third place in
points.
The women’s class did not disappoint at Unadilla,
with one of the closest battles the class has
seen all season. Maci Devenport sealed the deal
on her first ever women’s class win, with 2-1
moto finishes, respectively. At just seventeen
years old, Devenport is fresh to both the 450
machine and the women’s class, but she does not
let it show. “I was so excited to get my first
overall! It’s been something I’ve been dreaming
of since I started. It was a great weekend, and
I was lucky to have such a great race with Shay
[Honeywell],” said Devenport. In the points race,
Devenport is holding down second place with 163
points.

The return of Shay Honeywell to her first race
of the season added to the excitement of the women’s
class race. Honeywell stays busy with school and
therefore lacks the training and preparation of
the other racer’s; yet when the gate dropped on
her first moto, she holeshot and led the entire
race. “First moto I had Maci close by right from
the start and I had to dig deep.” said Honeywell.
The second moto, Honeywell took third, which landed
her second overall on the weekend. “It felt great
taking a second overall against the 13 other amazingly
fast women out there this weekend,” said Honeywell.

JB Racing’s Maddie Guyer rounded out the women’s
class podium with 4-2 moto finishes. Unadilla
was Guyer’s big return to ATV motocross racing
after sitting out the last few rounds due to an
injury. “I was finally healed enough to race New
York this weekend. I had tried a few races earlier,
but it was not working out with too much pain.
I felt much better and gained confidence back
on my quads as the weekend progressed at Unadilla.
I am going to work some more this week and hopefully
be back to riding at 100% soon,” said Guyer.

Another topic worthy of mention in the women’s
class is the sportsmanship shown between the top
competitors. When asked about her Unadilla win,
Devenport described how much she looked up to
Honeywell, and mentioned that, “Shay gave me hope
that I can go to school, and still come back and
do something I love so much.” Likewise, when Honeywell
was asked about her performance she said, “I must
give a shout out to the upcoming women in this
class who have really shown exponential growth
over these past few years and are now someone,
I myself, can look up to.” The future of the women’s
class looks very bright.
