Joe Byrd & #191 Dustin Wimmer battling
for the lead |
Meanwhile, Byrd and Wimmer were battling it out
for first place. Joe had grabbed the Holeshot, but
Wimmer was right on his tail. The two began to pull
away slightly as Wimmer waited for his opportunity
to get around Byrd. “I finally made the pass
on Joe, but he passed me right back and I couldn’t
get another opportunity to get around him before
the end of the Moto,” said Dustin. Byrd went
on to take the first Moto win with Wimmer in 2nd,
Dunk in 3rd, Gust in a close 4th and Natalie taking
5th.
Jeremy Lawson ran a consistent Moto, taking 6th,
with Jasmin Plante, Keith Little, Cody Miller,
and Harold Goodman rounding out the top 10 for
Moto #1. Epic/Can-Am’s Sage Baker and Warnert/Can-Am’s
Greg Gee tangled during Moto 1, putting Gee in
16th and Baker in a 17th place finish, while Yamaha’s
Pat Brown ended up with a flat tire causing him
to finish in 18th behind Baker. Suzuki’s
Chad Wienen was riding with a collarbone injury,
which got worse after a crash in Moto 1, and ultimately
caused him to sit out Moto 2.

Track conditions were considerable drier when
the gate dropped for Moto #2, but it was still
Joe Byrd who rode away with the Holeshot. Dustin
Wimmer and Harold Goodman were bar to bar, but
Wimmer edged out Goodman to take 2nd behind Byrd.
Right behind Goodman was Josh Upperman, Jasmin
Plante and Cale Downen.

Honda's
Harold Goodman & Josh Upperman |
“I got a much better start in the 2nd Moto,”
said Harold Goodman who was in a heated battle
for 3rd for most of the 2nd Moto. “I maintained
my position for about half of the Moto before
Josh (Upperman) got past me,” said Harold.
Goodman has a lot on his plate this year as next
week he will start defending his Extreme Dirt
Track Pro championship in Greenbrier, AR.
Josh Upperman, who was last off the line in the
first Moto, due to stalling, was having a much
better run in Moto 2. “I had a much better
start. I was right behind Goodman off the line
and was able to make a pass about half way through,”
said the Honda/Baldwin backed racer. Upperman,
who missed the Pro Opener at Glen Helen, still
has high hopes for this season’s series.
“My goal is to be consistent and hopefully
make it into the top 3,” said Upperman.
Upperman was contracted to originally run the
WPSA series, but now plans on sticking with AMA
National series, along with many other riders.

Cale Downen stood out from the crowd with
his retro Hond and pink gear during the
2nd Moto as he held off Arno & Natalie |
Cale Downen made his first racing appearance
of the season this weekend despite the fact that
he is still recovering from a wrist injury he
sustained last month. “This was my first
race since my injury. My wrist hurt a little in
the first Moto, but I was feeling pretty good
for the second one,” said Downen, who was
turning heads on his new K&K Honda 450R. “We
wanted it to look different so we went with a
vintage ’86 250r theme,” said Cale
of his old school look. Unfortunately for Downen,
his 2nd Moto did not go very well as he blew his
Motor on the 8th lap and could not finish.
