The
moms were out in force on Mother's Day.

As the weatherman promised, dark clouds began to
move in late on Saturday and rain began to fall
around midnight. With 3-4 inches of rain predicted,
along with strong winds, things were looking pretty
bleak for Sunday’s races. In the morning,
track officials decided that amateur classes would
be cancelled and the Pro Main would be cut to only
one moto. Over half of the track was deemed as unfit
for racing by track officials due to the muddy conditions
so the track was rerouted and many sections were
left out.

Meanwhile, all the Pros were scrambling to setup
their ATVs for the muddy conditions, and nearly
everyone dismounted their MX tires and mounted
up larger 20” rear tires. Also, many racers
mounted up full fender plastics and broke out
the duct tape for even more mud protection because
the track conditions were closer to a GNCC race
than motocross.

Dustin
Wimmer lined up on the far inside with Doug
Gust to his right with the pair having the
first gate picks |
Since there would be no heat race to determine gate
position, officials made the call to have gate pick
be determined by the riders points, which allowed
Dustin Wimmer first pick on the gate. “I chose
the far inside line because it was the shortest
into the first turn,” said Wimmer. Wimmer’s
choice soon proved to be a wise one.
Once the gate dropped Dustin Wimmer, Pat Brown,
and John Natalie were wheel to wheel and as they
approached the first turn, Wimmer’s gate
pick strategy came into play as he edged out Brown
and Natalie to take the holeshot and avoid getting
plastered with mud. As Wimmer was busy showering
everyone with mud, Joe Byrd, Brock Lyons, and
Jason Dunkelberger all spun out.
