Fort Dodge, IA - This Memorial
Day weekend Mineral City Speedway played host to
round two of the Iowa ATV Hare Scramble Series which
saw Carson Coffman take his first AA class win of
the season, which puts him in a 3-way tie for first
in the points race with Jason Gudde and Zac Johnson.
The weather for the morning classes was as close
to perfect as possible with sunny skies and mild
temperatures; however, temps and humidity were
on the rise for the afternoon classes and caused
a bit of fatigue for some racers, but the heat
and humidity were a welcomed change from round
one where muddy conditions took their toll on
both racer and machine.
There were 10 racers on the starting line for
the AA class, including Jason Gudde, who grabbed
the holeshot and was followed closely by Carson
Coffman, Derrick Schrock and Zac Johnson. As Jason
led for several laps, he had to contend with the
pressure from Derrick Schrock who was challenging
him for the lead. “Derrick was closing in
on me and we were battling, but then Derrick dropped
back,” recalled Gudde. “Then all of
a sudden Derrick was there again, but he was missing
a nerf bar and foot peg!” Schrock’s
mishap forced him into the pits to have a quick
repair job, which cost him valuable time and put
him in 9th place at the end of the race.
All though Schrock was no longer a threat, Coffman
had worked his way into 2nd and was soon challenging
Gudde for the lead. Coffman seized the opportunity
for a pass and took over the lead. Gudde, however,
stayed right on Coffman’s tail until Gudde
got caught up in lap traffic and found himself
40 seconds off the lead, but still in second place.
At the finish line, it was Coffman who took the
win followed by Gudde and Zac Johnson in third.
“I was really hoping Carson wouldn’t
show up this round. Maybe next round I’ll
get lucky and gas prices will be too high and
he won’t want to make the drive from Missouri,”
joked Gudde, in regards to the now three-way tie
for points between him, Coffman and Johnson.
Unfortunately, Gudde’s comment may ring
true for other racers as rising gas prices may
well be affecting their decision and ability to
race. According to IATVHSS organizer, Andy Kyner,
attendance is not quite what he had hoped for.
“We had somewhere between 240-250 racers
this weekend, which is a little lower than what
we were hoping for, stated Kyner.
