Waukon, IA - The Offroad Motorcycle and ATV Nationals Series continued in Waukon, Iowa at the Coyote XC. Always a top event in the series, the combination of a great course and perfect weather made this year’s race yet another excellent race. The Waukon track lends itself perfectly to cross country racing, with a mix of different terrain ranging from open grasstrack to challenging rocky stream beds and tight virgin woods trails. After one dustbowl after another at the last few races, I was relieved when a steady rain came through the region on Friday night. With enough precipitation to eliminate dust, but not enough to create a mudbog, day dawned with perfect conditions.

Heading into this event, I had managed to take a small two point lead in the series points standings over perennial favorite and 3-time OMA champion Rob Zimmerman with good races at the previous two rounds in Millville and Boyers. Young rookie Matt Lindle was third in the series standings after finishing consistently throughout the year. As we lined up for the start, the tension was high to see who would emerge the leader of the series going into the final two rounds. Rob got a perfect holeshot, and I followed him through the first of many grass track sections. The rolling hills were in perfect form, and blasting across them in fourth and fifth gear was the closest I’ve come to simulating a roller coaster ride on a quad. With no dust, Rob and I were able to circulate the track within feet of each other, to the delight of the spectators. In sharp contrast to the grass track, the tight woods were filled with virgin trails, where we were pioneering the track following only arrows on the trees. A boulder-filled stream bed and a long, uphill rock section were surely the culprits of many mashed skidplates and blown tires.
