Can-Am
/ Motoworks Josh Frederick pits for gas
& fresh goggles |
“I went through a few puddles and mud holes
where the water came up past the seat of my quad,
but even with all that the bike never skipped a
beat,” Frederick said happily about his Can-AM/Motoworks
DS450. Josh went on to claim his first win of the
season in pursuit of his second consecutive championship
and eagerly anticipates round number two. “I’m
really excited about the next round at Mesquite.
Today wasn’t really racing, it was more like
surviving,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Frederick’s Can-Am/Motoworks teammate,
Brandon Smith, who had a strong showing, finishing
3rd in his first WORCS appearance in the Open Pro
class, did not fair quite as well on Sunday. Smith,
who came off the line with a vengeance, ran into
mechanical problems about halfway into his 1st lap
forcing him to DNF. “I’m still not really
sure what happened. We think it may be something
with the clutch, but we won’t know for sure
until we get it torn down and can take a look at
it”, said a disappointed Smith. Brandon usually
races the Pro Class in the WPSA series, but plans
to be racing several more of the WORCS events as
long as they do not conflict with any of the WPSA
dates.

Doug
Eichner lead the Pro Race for 5 laps before
the water finally brought his charge to
a stop after maintaining a 20 second lead
over Josh Frederick |
Yamaha's
Dustin Nelson finished an impressive 2nd
Place in the Open Pro Class, but the sloppy
conditions ended his race early on Sunday
in the Pro Main |
Tim Shelman, who has been racing the series since
it’s inception also had a hard run on Sunday.
Shelman had issues with his goggles and ended
up going most of the race without any eye protection
and ended up having to seek medical attention
because of it when it was all over. However, despite
Shelman’s lack of visual aids, he still
managed to claim an impressive second place on
the podium. Once the checkered flag was waved,
Frederick stood in 1st place, with Shelman in
2nd and Brandon Brown in 3rd. Rounding out the
top five were Beau Baron from Atascadero, CA in
4th place and Marana AZ’s, John Shafe in
fifth.

Tim
Shelman ran without goggles for nearly the
entire race, and his face was covered in
mud when he crossed the finish line with
a 2nd Place finish |
Brandon
Brown raced for the last time on his Honda
and rounded out the Podium, and he will
switch to the Kawasaki KFX450R for Round
2 |
