When we arrived at the ride location, a fleet of Can-Am Commander 800R, 1000XT & X models were lined up for testing

At first glance the Commander line has a bold appearance that is undoubtedly Can-Am. All models are equipped with generous storage compartments including a dual level cargo box. The cargo box is two levels that are separated by a removable, weather resistant panel. The lower compartment is quite large and can accommodate a standard sized 21” carry-on suitcase full of camera gear. Not only does the lower compartment keep whatever is stored dry and safe, it also acts as a hidden compartment that can be utilized to secure things of value with an optional lock while out on the trails or dunes.

The Can-Am Commander features a large bed for storage along with an industry largest cargo box, which provides weather resistant storage & worked great for storing our camera gear on the test ride for photos because we didn't have to worry about it flying out of the back or being covered in mud or dust

The cargo box has a 600lb capacity & also features a tilt funcition
We were also pleasantly surprised by the size of the cargo bed as we were anticipating it to be smaller since the Can-Am Commander line is more performance inspired, but this side-by-side can be used as a capable work horse as well. The cargo box on both the 800R and the 1000 has a 600 pound total capacity and the Commander is capable of towing up to 1,500 pounds.

Getting in to the Commander seems much easier than most other side-by-sides and feels more like you are getting into a car than a UTV. We also noticed that you feel more enclosed and secure instead of feeling like your shoulders are partially out of the roll cage area and gives a better sense of security while out riding. The side nets on these machines are very easy to attach, with only one seat belt style buckle, and they seem very durable as well.

We were really impressed with the automotive style buckle for quickly removing or securing the safety net

Another feature that is an industry first is the seats. The seats are surprisingly comfortable with good lumbar and shoulder support, and the driver’s seat is adjustable without the need of any tools. All of these features are good, but what was the most impressive is that the seats are removable and free-standing with folding legs tucked underneath.

The seats in the Commander are extremely comfortable & feel just like sitting in car, and a very innovative feature is that they are easily removed to be used as a portable seat
