2012 Can-Am Outlander 1000 & 800R Utility ATV Test Ride Review
::Continued::

To improve handling in both two and four wheel drive Can-Am has the option to add its Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS). Can-Am’s DPS unit is similar to the ordinary Electric Power Steering (EPS) but features an on-the-fly handlebar switch can you can adjust. The modes are Minimum, Medium, and Maximum. We loved the ability to adjust the steering assist as we used different modes for along the trail. For high speeds we preferred to use the Medium setting and for more technical rock sections we used the Maximum setting making it very easy to turn the handlebars.

Can-Am's DPS (Dynamic Power Steering) came in handy when steering needed adjusted for differing terrain conditions like rock crossings, tight woods, or high speed open field sections

Even though the DPS came in handy in tight situations, we felt that the steering without DPS was very effective. We were really impressed on how sharp the Outlander turned corners compared to the Can-Am Renegade.

New for model year 2012 hydraulic disk brakes are used to slow down the Outlander 1000 & 800R. We felt that the braking worked fairly well as we found ourselves using the convenient hand brake lever located on the left hand side of the handlebars when we wanted to come to a complete stop. Out on the trails however, we used the Outlanders natural engine braking when slowing down for corners or navigating down hill.

The new 2012 Outlander 1000 & 800R utility ATVs both feature Can-Am's LinQ system cargo racks that can hold up to 100lbs in front and 200lbs in the rear

Both the 2012 Outlander 1000 & 800R received new styling. The new Outlander features aggressive bodylines, new dual taillights, and redesigned cargo racks. The redesigned racks are made up of durable reinforced composite instead of the tubular steel racks of previous models. The racks feature many holes that are not only convenient for tie-downs and bungee cords but also for Can-Am’s exclusive LinQ quick-attach accessory system. The LinQ system uses quick attachments that are provided with Can-Am PAC accessories like the Trunk Box, Deluxe Modular Bags, and Rack Extensions.

Can-Am Features several versions of the Outlander including the Outlander 1000 XT, Outlander 800R XT, Outlander 800R Max, Outlander 800R Max XT, Outlander 800R Max XT-P, Outlander 800R LTD, and the Outlander 800R X MR, all of which have many different options to choose from right from the factory!
We liked what Can-Am did with the 2012 Outlander and love how there are so many options to suit each riders needs. If you are looking for a Utility ATV with some grunt, we suggest taking a closer look at the Outlander 1000 and 800R.
