Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Dustin Wimmer began the 2009 season on top of his game winning three of the first four rounds of the 2009 AMA ATV Motocross Championship series, but a devastating shoulder injury shortly before round five almost crushed Wimmer’s hopes of taking his second consecutive National championship as he watched his points lead slip away.

Wimmer underwent surgery to repair his dislocated shoulder and was amazingly back in action at round six, where he was still not at 100%, but managed to take a top ten position to salvage points. Wimmer enlisted the help of Georgia sports chiropractor Dr. Rice to aid in his recovery and came back to win round eight, and claim the victory in round nine after one of the most intense Pro racing battles in recent memory.

ATVriders.com recently had the opportunity chat with Dustin Wimmer about his injury, his incredible comeback, and what might be in store for him after the season.

ATVriders.com: Dustin, you have had what seems to be a roller coaster of a season. You started out really strong being in the points lead, then getting injured, and now after round nine your back on top that must be quite an experience for you.
Dustin Wimmer: Yeah, I’ve really had some up’s and down’s this season, but I’m really stoked about being back in the points lead now. I’m going to be riding smart over the next couple of rounds and doing what I need to do to bring home that championship again.

#1 Dustin Wimmer kicked off the 2009 AMA ATV Motocross National Championship with three wins out of four races, and appeared to be on track to dominate the points race till accident after his Birch Creek Win sidelined him for Sunset Ridge, which dashed his hopes for a repeat championship

ATVriders.com: You had surgery on your shoulder can you tell us a little bit about that?
Dustin Wimmer: Well, they had to put three screws in there to hold everything together.

ATVriders.com: Are the screws still in there?
Dustin Wimmer: Yes, they’re still there, but they are kind of bothering me so I might have to get them taken out.

#1 Dustin Wimmer struggled the first 2 rounds after making his return, but by Round 8 at Muddy Creek, Wimmer was back on Top with a Win
ATVriders.com: Your first couple of races back, you were still feeling the effects of your injury, so you started training with Dr. Rice in Georgia. What exactly did he have you doing for your recovery?
Dustin Wimmer: Dr. Rice is a sports chiropractor and he had me doing lots of cross training, running and bicycling. Basically he focused a lot on cardio and he also focused on the mental aspect of it as well.

ATVriders.com: Did your injury have a big impact on your outlook for the season?
Dustin Wimmer: I was really bummed after my injury. I was thinking my run for the championship was over and that I had lost and basically it was over. Dr. rice helped me a lot as far as support goes with that.

ATVriders.com: How’s your outlook now?
Dustin Wimmer: I am never going to think like that again. From now on I am going to stay focused on the positives and keep working toward my goals. I didn’t think I would be back on top, but there were other guys who had some bad luck too and that helped me realize that anything can happen.
