Macon,
GA (3/24/2015)
– Three time defending Pro ATV Motocross Champion,
Chad Wienen, clinched the first round win of the
2015 AMA Mt. Dew ATV Motocross Championship Series
at Echeconnee MX, where he was joined on the podium
by Yamaha’s Thomas Brown and Can-Am/JB Racing’s
Jeffrey Rastrelli.
Anticipation was high for the first round of
the Pro ATV Motocross season and expectations
were even higher for some after several top pro’s
made their debut with new programs for the 2015
season at the Daytona ATV Supercross on March
10th.
It has been eight years since the AMA ATV motocross
series has traveled to Echeconnee MX near Macon,
Georgia where racers were greeted by a sandy,
technical track. The sandy texture of the soil
broke down over the course of the day, but during
practice, it was ideal for Corrosion Specialties/Hetrick
Racing’s Joel Hetrick to earn the ATVRiders.com
Top Qualifier Award. Many spectators were in attendance
and cheered wildly as the gate dropped for the
first moto of the season.

Defending champ, Chad Wienen was in fourth place
off the start for moto one and picked off Josh
Upperman early in the third lap. From there, Wienen
soon caught John Natalie, Jr., who was holding
down the number two spot. The pair battled intensely
for three laps before they connected and Natalie
went down in the fifth lap, which allowed Wienen
to take over second. “John and I were battling
for position and got together. It wasn’t intentional;
it was just hard racing,” said Wienen.

While Wienen battled with Natalie Jr, it allowed
Joel Hetrick to pull an almost nine second lead.
Wienen tried to close the gap but ran out of time
and finished in second place. “It was a great
track but it was brutal. Joel was riding good,
and I knew what I had to do for the second moto,”
said Wienen.

ATV Motocross Champion, Chad Wienen, charged
past Joel Hetrick to take over the lead
in Moto Two

In moto two, Wienen had a good start and quickly
worked his way into the number two spot and charged
hard after Joel Hetrick, who was in the lead.
Coming into a corner in the second lap, Hetrick
took a smoother inside line, but Chad Wienen stayed
on the gas and powered around him on the outside.
The pair battled and swapped positions a few more
times before Wienen was able to pull away when
Hetrick went down. From there, Wienen pulled a
good lead and claimed the moto two win and the
overall win in the season opener. “I’m really
pumped to get the red plate back. I am excited
to head to Texas. I am really focused on what
I need to do and hoping for another win there,”
said Wienen.
